Third degree burn

Hi guys!

I have managed to give myself, what i believe to be, a third degree burn on my ring finger on my right hand. The area i burned is very small (probably 1cm x 1cm). I burned myself at work (i work in a kitchen) on a pizza pan that had been in the oven at almost 300 degrees for 10- 15 minutes. I submerged my finger in cool water for half an hour after doing it but the area is now white and i can still feel it burning/ i'm in pain. What else can i do?

put moisturising anti-septic cream on it and leave it alone. That's pretty much all you can do - I recently burned my arm in much the same way, it takes quite some time to get better and the heat from continued work agitates it I found.

put soap on it. i have no idea why that works but apparently it does :p:
put it under a cold running tap too

Make sure you keep it covered and maybe take it to the doctor. I got a small burn on my foot about the same size (long story involving a treadmill) a long while back then it got infected and I had to see a nurse every day for a couple of months to get the burn redressed.

if it were a 3rd degree burn it would probably be black, and certainly wouldn't hurt so much. why? because 3rd degree burns go so deep they destroy the nerves that sense pain.

Run it under cold water, and once thats all done with then simply leave it to heal and stop being such a whuss!
No need for anti-septic creams pills or potions, just natural healing and keeping it clean.
Perhaps a plaster over it if its somehwere it will rub alot (or certainly if you are still working - remember it must be a blue one though).

Sparkly tiara ain't no wuss!

Sorry you burned yourself :frown: I think leaving it alone would probably be a good idea.. just try and keep it clean?

From my (very limited) knowledge of burns/hot things, the severity is about contact time.. I imagine you retracted your hand pretty quickly? If so, the burn probably isn't toooooo bad. I suppose in this situation, pain is good!

On one drunken new years I put my hand on a hot plate that was on and completly burnt all of my right hand :frown: Had to get to hospital twice AND play two gigs with it (I'm a drummer). Just keep it clean and re-dress it every day, but apart from that, there isn't a lot you can do.

Don't put things like soap and butter on burns - it's not good for them as what you need to do is get the burn as cold as possible as quickly as possible. Do this by running it under a cold tap (or swishing it in cold water) for at least five minutes. I used to work as a baker and I was forever catching my arms and fingers on the trays and there's really not a lot you can do beyond cooling the burn. Keep it clean once you've cooled it and cover it with a non fluffy dressing, and if you're left with a mark/scar try some bio-oil to help it heal.

I should have been clearer. The centre of the burn is white, and it is black on one of the edges. The white area is numb, but the red area around it (which covers most of the top part of my finger hurts like hell! I didn't think there was much else i could do, but thought i should just check!

ouch, poor you. maybe get a bag of icecubes and hold it on/take some pain killers. it'll probably just heal itself fine after a bit of time. the other day i was dancing in a club and someone stuck their cig into my finger.. i didn't notice for a while because i was er.. drunk (lol) but the ash was still on my finger and still burning. i now have a really disgusting deep hole in my finger that makes me feel sick everytime i look at it. uh, yeah that is no help to you but just thought i'd share my own gross burn story.

it doesnt sound too bad to me I had second degree on my legs and i had huge pus-filled blisters which were agonising.

I recovered with some minor discoloration so i really wouldnt worry. Apply moisturiser or burn cream to ease the healing but DO NOT put aloe vera on it that will sting.

I know how you feel - I once picked up a pot of salt that had been evaporating on a roaring bunsen burner flame Burns like that can be so irritating. Just don't pick it or anything - leave it to heal on its own.

Just ignore it and the pain will eventually go.

Dont put anything on it.
I've burnt my hand pretty badly in the past, molten sugar, motors, explosives. I have a burn across my right index finger which no longer has any finger print on it :P.

every time it hurts just run it under cold water to numb the area.

Don't put soap on it - it'll dehydrate the area which will make things take longer. Put moisturiser on before you go to bed and when you wake up but otherwise don't do anything else. No plasters or picking or anything.
