If so, can't you just lie and pretend you're going to live away from home? or do they check somehow?

They're smaller yes but from my experience, the difference between them living at home and living away wouldn't be enough to cover rent. I think I would have got about 500 extra per year for living away from home.

At the end of the day, all loans have to be paid back so does it matter whether you're getting more money or not?

There are no grants for SFE students.

    What you're suggesting is fraud.

As mentioned above, the difference between the living at home and living away from home loan isn't actually that much.

I'm not suggesting they lie about where they live, would have them on your back quicker than you could say student finance! I know of students who did move in with someone on lower incomes when at uni so they could claim more, whether that is defined as fraud or not I don't know as I didn't do it. I have however edited the post so that comment is removed as I wouldn't want others to take it the same way you did, really sorry if it came across that way, didn't mean it too!
Personally I stayed at home, got the bare minimum loan and worked part time to subsidise it. If you're going to work whilst in uni, check with student finance as to whether you need to declare it. I rang them just to check
