Hi, I live in Wolverhampton and I am currently in year 10. I will soon have to apply for work experience but are totally stuck for ideas! I picked triple science, history and geography for my GCSE's and I am interested in maths and science, which I would hopefully like to pursue further in the future. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas for work experience.

    Hiya,

It can be quite tricky to get w/e which is directly related to maths and science when you're under 16. Sometimes in year 10 you may have to find somewhere unrelated and get some general experience in the work place. In year 10 I tried local chemical companies, engineering companies and environmental companies. You can also go on some really fun science residentials such as Headstart and Smallpeice trust which I've had to do instead of work experience. In year 12 there's also work experience placements at lots of national science/engineering companies.

    Hello,
Wow, that is an early time to start applying for work experience! My school doesn't encourage us to apply for work experience until the end of year eleven. Therefore, you may struggle to find work experience placements that accept under 16's.

However, you mentioned that you were interested in persuing the sciences in the future. If you are indeed interested in medicine, then a great form of work experience could be caring for others. I know that it doesn't sound 'glam' and fabulous, but, honestly, caring for the elderly etc or working in a charity shop adds more to your CV. Plus, I know that medical schools are insistent that you do have a work experience where you help others. This may be something that you can consider doing when you are below the age of 16. It is a great experience, I worked at a charity shop as part of my Bronze dofe and it was very interesting.

Thank you for your replies! At my school we do work experience at the end of year 10, so I'm trying to start to get ideas earlier rather than later. I'm more interested in the physics and maths side of science, however I will try some of the ideas suggested. Thanks again for the input! 😀
