I am currently in my first year of University studying Mechanical Engineering and for one of my modules, fluid mechanics, we have been given this question and I was wondering if anyone could help me? Even if its to just point me in the right direction that would be very helpful.

I have attached a picture of the diagram from the question and this is what we have been asked to do.

Firstly I need to find the total net force on the gate, bearing in mind that there is water to the right of the gate and air on the left.

Then I need to find the centre of pressure on the gate.

Lastly, I need to work out the tension in the rope that is needed to just start opening the gate assuming that the gate has no weight.

Thanks again!
