I'm currently looking to study animation at university, and i've become really worried about meeting people there who do drugs. I'm fine with drinking, and I do that myself, but I don't have any interest in being with people who do drugs (mostly because all the experiences i've had with people like that have been really poor, and made me feel incredibly uncomfortable). I've talked to my boyfriend about it, and he says that there's loads of different people at university (he's a couple of years older than me, and in his second year) and that I shouldn't worry, as he's only met a couple of people in his time there who do it.
It's honestly terrifying to me. The last person I met who'd done drugs like weed was basically trying to manipulate me into wasting my time with him, and didn't seem to really care about what he was doing with his life.
I just can't be around people like that, because not only do I find it uncomfortable, it really breaks my heart to think that young people are spending more time getting high than actually studying for degrees they're paying thousands of pounds to get...
Is there anyone out there that can reassure me that I'll find some people at uni who just drink to have a good time, and not fill their bodies with drugs...

Trust me, alcohol is a hell of a lot more dangerous than weed. You don't get into fights, beat up people, sexually assault people when you've smoked weed. You potentially do when you drink alcohol. It's a drug like any other.

I got offered pretty much everything in freshers, although I did get around a little bit, and one of my flatmates was an ex druggy. Just say no and move on, the vast majority of people just use alcohol, expect lots of silly shots and games, late Fridays, there are quieter people who don't drink but its more difficult to socialise with them, as they are not naturally social people, in my experience I recommend drinking a little until you meet people who are quieter

Oh and, the ex druggy was fine btw, no issues whatsoever, was a cool dude who just liked listening to rock.

Absolutely. Of course there are plenty of students like that. You'll be fine.

You'll probably meet some who do drugs, in the same way that you'll meet some on a total health and fitness kick, some who eat too much cake, some who obsess over sport... etc etc. Uni life is a cross-section of society. Younger students on their first time away from home may be more inclined to flirt with drugs, but by no means all of them or even the majority, will.

Don't worry about how other people live their lives. Just get on with yours. If you're a decent person, you will connect with plenty of other decent people.

Thank you. It really does mean a lot to hear that. I just really want to make the same sort of friends I have at the moment. The kind who don't need or want drugs to have a good time. I was getting quite worried about it, and even started considering whether uni was a good idea after all

Honestly you'll probably meet a lot of people who you never would have guessed used drugs while at uni, the large majority of the time they're just normal people and doing drugs for them won't be a necessity so much as an occasional luxury.

If you shift your perspective to the longer term: any career within a competitive environment that involves high pressure deadlines, will also bring some interaction with drug users. It's the way it is.

‘Fill their bodies with drugs’.. I’m not an advocate for drinking OR drugs but what your saying is ridiculous. Alcohol is a drug and one of the most dangerous of the lot addiction wise AND harm to user and anti social with a lot of people getting cocky and aggressive when drunk. The least of your worries is drugs like weed which is un comparable to alcohol harm wise and even ecstasy etc are safe if you know your doses and again much less harmful than alcohol 😂makes me laugh , your filling your body with poison when drinking

You'd be amazed by the amount of people who function quite normally in society with pretty frequent drug use and still manage to achieve great things. My best friend got 3A* and an A at A-level doing further maths physics and psychology. There's nothing wrong with a bit of drug use on special occasions every now and then it can be done safely safer than drinking a load of alcohol and blacking out ****faced.
