Everywhere! :p: The majority are harmless, though, so I wouldn't worry too much. I've been here for about a year now and I still haven't had any hassle from them. The uni area doesn't really have that many about, so you should be pretty safe there. However, if you're staying at Murano or Wolfson, chances are that you'll spot some in Maryhill :p:

You sure you were in glasgow :p:. Na west end doesnt have many but if you ever venture into the city centre at night you're bound to get a glimpse of them in their natural habitat.

I suggest checking out this website: And they are called neds in scotland not chavs.

Forewarned is forearmed.

I would say the east end would certainly be an area to avoid
Reply 5
Go East End and Southside, i dare you.
If you say 'chav' in Glasgow, no-one will know what you mean. The Weegie equiv. is a ned.

You're bound to see neds in Glasgow, they are everywhere, apart from maybe the main area of Glasgow Uni.

I don't mind them, though some can be pretty dangerous and many carry knives. I helped one escape from the police the other day, I have no idea what he'd done.

Yeah i've just been living in the West End for a year, spending most of my time there/Finnieston/City centre and didn't have any problem until my last week when i was jumped for a pack of fags.

Glasgow has a really bad rep. In reality, it's fine.
And even if it's not, taxi's are so cheap you shouldn't ever be in a position where you need to worry about it more than any city!

"Chav" is an attitude, not just a clothes style...are you suggesting there are none in London or France?...think again I'm afraid.
London is full of chavs from what people who live there tell me. Aberdeen has plenty of neds too. But Glasgow is like the Mecca for them all
Reply 10
Why? are you a chav? and you meant attitude not attitute?
Yesh, he meant attitude. And how does telling you there are chavs outside Glasgow make her a chav?
Reply 12
who told you that shes a chav?
You asked if she was a chav on the basis of her giving you info, that's what i was querying. How you came to the conclusion that she would/could be
Reply 14
Yes I meant attitude, thanks for pointing that out as it is highly relevent to my post.

My point is that "neds, chav," whatever you want to call them are present in many different countries, cities and cultures and are not just some kind of Glaswegian phenomenon.
Reply 15
It's just as relevant as your reply to my original question which being where were the chavs in Glasgow. Not 'what are chavs' nor 'are there no chavs in London or France'.

I was just off Dumbarton Rd in Partick (West End). It was like 3 in the morning or something. There were just two young guys and cause i'd left a shop at silly o'clock i think they assumed i was pissed and had cash, which i didn't.

I've never been mugged before, and i lived there a year. All my pals are Weegies born and bred and very very rarely have trouble! It's really not that bad at all. Certainly wouldn't put me off Glasgow in the slightest.

Infact, only a couple of hours ago i was chatting to a pal of mine going to Strathy this year how safe i consider Glasgow to be compared to London/Bristol/Manchester.

Wasn't it really scary????

I will be tucked in bed my 9pm. Always carry pepper spray. Travel everywhere by taxi. Have 999 on speed-dial.

It is true that Glasgow has an horrific reputation with people who've never lived there, but all of my friends who live/have lived there say that it's no bother at all.

It was. Hilarious when i think back on it. Not only because they only got fags, but because i was the last pack of Lucky's i could afford. :frown:
My flatmate was on holiday so i basically camped out at a guy's house for a couple of nights haha. It was a good excuse..!

Nah but. Glasgow taxi's are so cheap, it'd be silly to wander about willy-nilly. I just don't sleep and needed nicotine!
