I am begging to think that the left vs right political spectrum is no longer a big a issue and it is now moving to nationalism vs liberalism as the main arguement, if you look at the Brexit vote it was won by white working class men and it has been the same demographic which has won Trump presidency as a core support, People seem to be rejecting left vs right as a lot of the left voted brexit aswell. A lot of americas older voters voted trump who may lean left voted for Trump down to immigration and foreign affairs policies and it seems to have changed from last year the 2015 UK election was won by with the main issue being the economy, but roll forward a year to 2016 with the Brexit vote immigration was key to win Brexit and it was key to win Trump presidency

Trump is a right wing protectionist so he is capitalist but doesn't believe in the free market really as he will impose huge tarrifs on china. I think the UK public don't mind immigrants but only if they are high skilled, not taking jobs and under cutting wages. Many Asians voted for brexit as well as it wasn't an anit immigration , it was a vote to control our borders, give everybody an equal chance to come in. Brexit in the short term will be bad for the economy however in the long term if we get deals else where it will be better in the long term.
People I think are tired of the establishment and Obama failed America / didn't do much and also the American population is divided. Hialry clinton was also very unpopular, if it were any other democrat they probably would have won. Brexit wasn't a left/right referendum , it was a mix of issues. In a way there is a sense in what your saying as labour voters have gone to UKIP. Currently everything is up in the air. Just have to wait and see. And remember dont trust polls!
