Wessex you have to pay - and I'm assuming you would have to at Glen cos I remember seeing barriers there before. And if you were there on an open day - I presume that it would've been free parking for that day anyway. Though a word of warning, first years aren't strictly allowed cars.

You have to have a permit to park in halls.. No free parking unless you park on a road outside the halls complex. You get 3 visitor permits a year for if your parents/friends come to visit which you have to go and get from your halls office.

When I was in Wessex for my 1st year... Pay a pound and park in Monty each time you leave. In Glen for my 4th year. Glen is permits only. Don't make the clampers richer. They stung me for £95. *****.

Not any more you can't :frown: Changed a couple of weeks ago.

Residents may complain to the council if you regularly park outside their houses (I don't know if that does anything, but I've heard them doing it).
You really wont need a car if you're in halls - public transport links in Southampton are really good

And you really *shouldn't* bring a car into the city if you're a first year, it's against your halls contract (and a condition imposed by the council on the university). Parking on the street isn't possible near some halls (residents parking only) and is pretty dodgy near to some others...and the few places it's not dodgy or impossible the residents are very quick to complain to the uni/hall managers.

If you really HAVE to bring your car into the city then your best bet is to ask on the susu forums or advertise on the sussed noticeboard to see if anyone is willing to let you use their driveway/park outside their student house near-ish to the uni (ie within 30 minutes walk). Usually it's possible to find someone with a driveway but no car who will let your park there for £50 or so for the whole year (but make sure you check with your insurer what it will cost if your car is being kept either on the road or on someone elses drive)

thanks PQ and everyone. its a bummer really lol i wud love to take my car, i know public transport is posed 2 be good there. but im just thinking ive had enough of waiting for a bus in the pooring rain or freezing cold...

Lets put it this way. If I want to get from Monte into town, there are 6 buses an hour. If I want to get from Monte to Highfield, there are also 6 buses an hour...so you don't need to wait long.

The big halls bus stops are fairly close to shelter too.

I parked on the road for a bit. You get notes sometimes. Cars do get smashed up, especially in Wessex. Usually because people are stupid and leave stuff/stero-face on display. If you want to bring a car you could find somewhere to park it. No point driving to uni because you can't park on campus and anywhere near uni is residents only/2 hours max and it's very hard to find a space. Lots of buses run into town. You don't really need a car but I do love having mine here because waiting for a bus and carrying shopping on a bus is a pain, plus I can go anywhere when I please.

IF YOU BRING A CAR THEN IT IS HIGHLY LIKELY YOU WILL BE A PERSONAL TAXI FOR YOUR FRIENDS. Happened to my friend. Was picking people up from the train station, picking them up in the morning when they went back to a bird's house. Not fun. I'm sure you can get by for a year without a car.

Your priorities may change at uni...

I got away with having a car in the first year but it took a LOT of sneaking around and honestly wasn't worth the hassle. I didn't mind being a grocery taxi once a week for friends and if they were really in a bind but some 'friends' really tried to take advantage of the situation! Plus, now the uni-link service is SOO much better than it was back then and there is always online grocery shopping!

Legally there is nothing the council can do if your car is taxed, has an MOT and is parked in a legal parking space. Everyone has as much right as the residents to park on the street (unless it is a permit only area). However, you may be breaking the universities regulations by bringing your car.
