Hey

Looking at your requirements, the Golf is out and the Polo is pretty much too.
Although you can still get some for that price.
A Ford Fiesta is a safe bet, along with a Fiat Punto.
For the price you're not going to get a good Honda, they are a little more expensive for a good one.
But yeah a Fiesta, Punto, Peugeot 207, Renault Clio, Citroen C3 are the main options

No worries
For a Golf you're looking at £3000 minimum, more for a decent one
Polo's can be picked up for £1500 but a decent one would be £2500+

Fiat Panda or 500 will fit pretty well. You can always install a better speaker system If you need to.

Very simple construction, cheap spare parts, engines are very reliable, especially the gasoile F.I.R.E. engines.
I own one. By now it's 11 years old. Won't sell it, it's too good.
