When people don't take mental health conditions seriously. Its one thing to admit you don't know anything about the conditions, which is fine but many people don't do that. They blatantly just say the conditions don't exist or people make them up for attention, sympathy etc or they spout made up facts about the conditions which are based on nothing more than misconceptions with no hint of truth. Grinds my gears so much

In my experience in working in mental health, some people do make up or exaggerate mental illness for attention and sympathy, so I actually can see why people would think that to be the case. Therefore, it's the people who exaggerate or pretend that annoy me as they're giving mental illnesses a bad name for genuine people, wasting people's time and money. Unfortunately, anxiety and self-harm behaviours are examples of that.

I think that if someone is self-harming they clearly have a mental health issue...how could they not...

I agree - there most likely is an underlying cause, be it psychological or social. However in some cases, the harm is very superficial, it heals and clearly made aware to others. In some cases, this can get repeated in a cycle continuously, at which point health professionals have to say it's just their choice if they wish to harm themselves. It's in more severe cases that the harm is much deeper, does not heal and is potentially life-threatening. But it's also kept secret from everyone else, indicating that the person genuinely intends to severely harm themselves.
