I still have a drink occasionally but not to excess. Originally it was because I always needed to be able to drive the car in an emergency (diabetic husband, 2 disabled children meant a fair amount of midnight hospital trips with no warning), now it is because if I do, I can't take my pain meds for a fairly large portion of time afterwards.
Other people have already covered most of the reasons I don't drink. An additional reason for me is my memory, it's by far my strongest attribute. I remember with crystal clarity events, conversations, tv and other fun stuff going back over 20 years. I would never want to destroy or even slightly diminish my ability to do that.

I observed ludicrous behaviour of heavily intoxicated people at university. I shared a house with people who became intolerable after getting wasted. I'm a very shy person by nature, but I decided to just dive in when it came to socialising at uni. The only obstacle to breaking shyness, IMO, comes from people's false misconceptions about themself.

I should say that I don't have a problem with people drinking (or doing other drugs) if it has no affect on me.
I don't drink as i don't need too to have fun. I have lots of hobbies and interests that don't leave me feeling sick the next day. Going to party after party becomes a big bore, speaking to idiots you hardly know.
My code is: if you need something to help you cope in social situations, you shouldn’t be there (i.e needs to get drunk to talk to a girl or too nervous)Also a lot of my ex friends think that booze is some super elixir that can make everything great. I mean ****. If you can’t do it sober why do it drunk?

This thread is two years old.
Why do so many people here equate 'drinking' with 'being drunk'. It's as if no-one's realised that you can have a few drinks without being blind drunk on the floor.
I'm closing this thread cos it's old and that gets confusing. If anybody wants to discuss something similar please feel free to post a new thread.
