Biology at Royal Holloway-questions

Well as the title says, I've been accepted at RH for Biology BSc and would like to know more about the course, especially how its assessed. I really dont know much about the way they mark in Uni except the whole '1st'/'2nd' business lol :p: How exactly is the work marked? Do they still use the good old A/B/C system?

I assume we have exams in the first year - how important are those, i.e. %-wise - do they count towards the final mark at all? Also, how is the final mark even obtained? Is it from the total of the exam marks from each year?

Lastly, if any does Bio at RH - how is it? Pros and cons? Lot of lab work or mainly theory? And do the exams consist of any practicals?

Aside from qs about the course specifically- how is a typical day at RH structured? When do lectures normally start, how long are they usually and how often a week do they take place? How are the lecturers themselves- not obviously expecting them to spoonfeed me but are they helpful/understanding or spiteful as Ive heard about some Unis?

Lots of questions I know , I'd really appreciate any replies, especially from those who've done/are doing this course.

Thanks in advance

i dont think your 1sy year counts at all, u just need to pass
i may be taking it or switching to hist.

1st year doesn't count towards the final year...it's only your second and 3rd year marks which contributes on a 1:2 ratio .....

dynamite_man knows about these things, but where is he?
anyway, when i asked him about bio he told me that the timetable in the first term was something like:

Monday: 9 - 11 lecture, 11 - 5 lab/practical
Tuesday: 9 - 11 lecture
Wednesday: Nothing (aka sports day, where a lot of training for sports takes place)
Thursday: 10-11 lecture, 11 - 5 lab/practical
Friday: 9-10 lecture, 11 - 2 lab, 2 - 3 lecture, 3-5 lab.

but they separate us in groups for the labs so we don't do all the above. he also told me that the labs/practicals don't necessarily end at 5pm!

hope i helped!!

i really don't know the way they r going to separate us but i guess we won't be doing labs for so many hours a day!! it would be exhausting, especially if we don't have a break for lunch.. if u can find dynamite_man profile PM him and he will answer your question. he may be on vacations that's why he hasn't written anything for weeks! i love biology but so many hours a day may 'kill' us!

Tell me about it! I love Bio too but detest practicals- nevertheless I did expect them of course - just not for THAT bloody long!?!?!   I got my admissions pack thing from RH today with a whole booklet about the Bio course - it describes the 'typical week in the First Year' as:

1) Eight 1 hour lectures, 2 per day
2) Three 2-4 lab classes/fieldwork visits
3) One 1 hour tutorial or study session
4) One essay/practical report to be handed in
5) Sports or club activity (both are voluntary) on Wedneday afternoon-this time is kept free for students in all departments
6) One full weekday free for individual study
7) There is almost no formal teaching after 5pm and none at weekends
