    What are the differences
    Imperfect:
    a) things that were happening at the time.
    b) situations that had already started and were still ongoing at the time.
    c) past habitual actions
    d) descriptions of physical and moral characteristics.

    Preterite:
    a) one-off, unique past events - you can often put a date or a time saying when this event took place.
    b) a series of past events in chronological order, one after the other.

Let's look at the two verbs you've already done in the light of this:

Nosotros (pasar) quince días in la Costa del Sol cuando mi amigo me (proponer) una excursión a Granada.

For pasar: we were already on the Costa del Sol and were still there when my friend made his proposal. So pasar needs to be imperfect.

For proponer: my friend made this proposal once, at a certain time. So proponer needs to be preterite.

    Hope this helps!
