Stability region of multistep method (Milne-Simpson's) Watch

    Hi, I'm trying to show that the stability region of this multistep method Name:  image.gif
Views: 30
Size:  417 Bytes
    is a line segment [-√3 i, √3 i]
    So far I've got
    π(λ,z)= λ² - 1 - /3 (λ² + 4λ + 1)
    = (1 - z/3)λ² + (-4z/3)λ + (-1 - z/3)
    I've tried solving for λ using the quadratic formula but haven't gotten anywhere
    Could anyone help me with how to go about doing this?
