David Collett Hall for a Sociology Student?

I applied for Royce as my first choice of hall but got into David Collett (one of my alternative choices). As far as I am concerned, DC hall is like 700m away from the social science department (according to the uni map)? How long does it take to walk that distance? Is there a free internal shuttle bus or something like that?

P.S Is DC hall really far away from the SU?

firstly - you could have lectures anywhere on campus, they wont all be in your department. from DC to the SU i reckon would take 15 mins. and so its gonna be just less than that to your lectures!

I do sociology and you'll be fine. All of your lectures are in EHB pretty much which is about a 10, 15 minute walk. I was in Elvyn which is pretty much next to DC and I could easily set off after 8:50 and be there for 9. DC from Union is about 15, 20 minutes walk. You're only about a 5 minute walk from the middle of the student village. The map is very deceptive, you're not miles out at all. Trust me when I say you won't need the bus for your lectures!! lol

There is a bus, but at 40p to go somewhere else on campus, not worth it!!

I was in DC last year, main reason why i didn't like it was becuase it just seemed so far away! But it is good exercise, lol  I'd say at max it was about 15min ish to EHB so about 20 odd to the Union... Good thing though is that you are right next to the Library, v useful when it comes to exams!

You could always get a cheap bike from Halfords or somewhere - DC to the main lecture theaters in the centre of campus is about a 2 - 5min bike ride, depending on how well you're bike's geared

Thanks guys for all the quick and helpful responses. I'm glad to hear that DC is close to the library as I will certainly spend a considerable amount of time there. I will look into the possibility of buying a bike but will try to get around on foot first before I settle in.

Further question, is there Sainsbury's or TESCO near the uni and how do you get there? Otherwise is there a convenient store (Post office/Co-Op etc.) in the uni, specifically near DC Hall?

Sainsbury's and Tesco are both nearby. You can get on the bus next to DC to take you straight to Sainsburys for £1.70 return. The Purple Onion (PO) Is a co-op and is in the student village, so 10 mins from DC

Reply 7

Tesco is only about a mile and a quarter from DC so not very far at all. about 30mins walk.

Reply 8

As you're in catered halls though, the small convenience stores on campus should be fine.

DC's also catered 19 meals per week, so you'll get two meals per day at weekends (3 meals Monday - Friday).

OH MY GOD! 700m from your dept, oh crap, thats a long way. Dude, get used to it, especially when you look for accomodation off campus in the returning years. If you're that worried about distances, bring a bike. I was in falk-egg first year, and had to walk across to engineering most days which is a good mile.

Those words shuldn't be used in the same sentence. I'd reccomend trying a local bike store, I work in halfords and everything there is over priced.

If, like most students, you plan on getting a house in your 2nd year I'd make the most of being in DC, because in more cases that's closer than any house you'll be in

Reply 15

How's the pricing on rental properties outside (but close to) the uni? I shall be looking for a 1-bed room flat in my 2nd yr.... any ideas?

Reply 16

This year they're £122 a week. Prices will obviously be higher next year

Reply 17

Why a 1 bedroom flat? Wouldn't you want to move into a house with your friends?

I'd say the average price of a room in a house in Loughborough is around £65-70 a week.

Reply 18

Change that to about £65-75, really. I've seen a fair few houses closer to town that are £75 a week.

Reply 19

Thanks for giving some idea on the price range. More question! Should I get additional insurance for my stuff in the hall room? I've been quoted for 11 pounds/month by Endsleigh to insure 3500 quids worth of stuff including accidental insurance for my precious MacBook Pro laptop. Is this really necessary?

P.S. Are halls in Loughborough (DC in particular) secure? I should hope that Loughborough is a "safe" town, especially while being within the uni perimeter.
