I talk to myself sometimes when I'm thinking things through, but I can't say I've ever argued with myself, or indeed 'someone' in my head.
Could it be schizophrenia? I'm no psychologist so I don't know, but it sounds like that, possibly.

...first sign of madness.

Is this...

1) Talking to yourself as in you are having a conversation with another person who only exits in your mind and not in real life out aloud?

1b) Talking to yourself as in you are having a conversation with another person who only exits in your mind and not in real life in your mind?

2)Talking to an image of a person you know in your mind like you are rehearsing a conversation you want to have with them (out aloud or in your mind)?

3)Talking to yourself along the lines of "common i can do this", "Don't wuss out now" etc (out aloud or in your mind)?

4)Talking to another side of your personality possibly? Like trying to suppress a strong feeling?

I highly doubt that its schizophrenia.

Its a sign of nothing... Perhaps clarification within the mind.

Do you guys really think its that serious? I do it loads in a day but I'm usually talking to someone who is a real person like my mum or something thinking back to something she's said in the past. I also do things like think I'm talking as the Prime Minister or making a great speech e.g 'a new dawn has broken has it not' when Blair made his first speech. It can be quite weird have a full blown argument but at the time I imagine the person is there.

Meh, I talk to myself if I'm trying to remember something or concentrating on something, or to I dunno, the car or something when I'm trying to get it to work. I'm not mad!

Reply 8

My fiance does it all the time... its cute. lol!

Thats just going through what has happened and trying to gain a better perspective or what you should have said instead, nothing wrong with that.

Thats just a fantasy, nothing big.

Hmm.. I NEVER talk to myself, how odd :s-smilie: .. I think things to myself like 'god cheer up' etc but I never actually say them out loud!

Reply 11

I swear at myself sometimes.

Reply 12

I talk to myself a bit. Nothing wrong with it I think.

Reply 13

I think I do it a bit too. I sure hope it isn't a sign of any mental disorders :|

I'm sure a lot of people do this when they're about to chicken out of something... You're just reassuring yourself!

Reply 15

I do it all the time, simply because I have a penchant for intelligent conversation.

Reply 16

Nothing wrong with it - seems to happen a lot with the 'Damn, that's what I should have said' or assertiveness stuff, as you said. I do it a lot, so it must be healthy

As long as you know its yourself you are talking to and that nobody else is really there, and you dont expect a reply then its fine. I talk to myself all the time, just sort of thinking out loud really in an absent minded kind of way. Are you quite an imaginative person? if so thats probarbly explains the talking as prime minister thing, you just have an imaginative mind and think out loud! As long as you dont feel concerned about it or think its a problem im sure its fine.

I do it all the time, sometimes it's easier to sort everything you're thinking about if you say it out loud.
Also talking to the dog/cat/fish etc is also very good.

And I don't think anybody can deny shouting at objects that either hurt you or go wrong such as the washing machine
Or shouting at the TV, even though you know they can't hear you, it still makes you frustrated when people don't do as you say (or is that just me?)

My mum talks to herself, and I find it incredibly frustrating because the stuff she says is really insensitive. It's completely driven her and my dad apart. So on my part, I hate it when people talk to themselves when they know others can hear and be hurt by what they say.

I think it can be quite normal, I sometimes do it when I'm caught in a really embarassing situation or even just to let out steam when angry/hurt. I don't think there's anything wrong with talking to your self, really. If you can control yourself when doing it that is!
