I do, it's a bit grim I'm afraid. Never been inside but I've dropped cattle off there.
The 2 I know local to me, are Melton Meats about 20/30 mins on from Grantham which is quite good, but only does sheep.
And the best abattoir I've ever seen is the one attached to Morris' butchers in South Killworth near Market Harborough, however this would be quite a bit out of the way (though worth it imo for just a day or 2)

um i don't think so - there's just the one in aldershot. basically it's like hell on earth and they dont seem to keen on having someone come for a day hmph
edit: just did some serious googling lol and may have found the one you're talking about - however there are loads of news reports too about it being badly affected by foot and mouth. wonder if it closed

I heard there was one in Guildford. Maybe I misheard or something. That's about an hour away, so it's not too bad. I asked all our local butchers and they get their meat from places like Scotland and Wales. Not really feasible to travel up there :P

    Hi !
I would like to do some work experience in UK this summer but as I'm an EU student, I don't know where to go !
Does anyone know a LA/SA vet practice, lambing, dairying or kennel/cattery (WHATEVER) which would be okay taking me ? ( no matter how long and where it is since I'll have to take a flight anyway! but south of england would be preferable..)

I don't ask you to ask them for me of course, but if you know a good place and if they have an email adress (I'd prefere that instead of phone them..) it would be so great!

I hope you can help me!
    Thank you!

In my honest opinion if you want LA vets and farm work you're best off going north a bit. Just a wider range of places up there.

As for giving you names etc.. to be honest everyone's going to have so many contacts. Why don't you simply work out where you'd like to be based (maybe you have relatives around a certain city or something) and google places in that location?
    Easiest thing to do

Okay, thank you for your advice!

And to answer to Annaconda, I haven't done any work experience yet ... I know I know... but the fact is that in my country farmers and vets aren't used to take volunteers ... it doesn't work like that in France!
But I'm totally available this summer, that is to say from june 27th until august 31st !
And I have no contacts in UK so the location doesn't really matter since wherever I could be i will have to find accomodation ...

hmm I would say there are opportunities in France!
I lived there and before applying had spent 5 weeks at a small animal vet practice, 2 weeks in an equine practice, worked at the SPA, 2 weeks at a dairy farm, all withing 20 mins of my house. (+ lots of weeks in England)
It was quite difficult to get, as people aren't as used to EMS as in Britain, but it is definitely possible, you just need to explain it well!
Are you sure you have tried hard enough?
It is also a very good idea to do work experience in the UK though, as it shows that you're aware of the management practices in the UK.. In my RVC interview I was asked to compare the French and English SA practices I went to.
Basically, it's really hard work being an EU applicant and you really need to make an effort to get all the work experience necessary! Good luck though!
You might have to consider staying in b&b during your vet work experience, as it's usually harder to get accomodation than when you work on farms.. can get quite expensive in the long run!
Where do you live in France, are you still in the lycée?

I am sure this has been asked before many times, but how many days or weeks do you have to do somewhere for it to carry any weight as w/e? I have long term w/e - 2 years full time at a 24 hour emergency and critical care hosp, 11 months full time at small an hosp., am currently working full time at a small an clinic in the USA, have also worked at a stables for 3 6 month periods and an exotic animal rescue for 3 months. But over the next few months I want to line up a few different things i.e kennels, labs, vet specialists etc...but like I said I work full time- in fact 6 days a week at the clinic, so spare time is very limited. If i do 2-5 days at various places, will that count?? Or should I try do do larger chunks of time at a smaller number of places?? Any advice or pointers much appreciated!

2-5 days would count as work experience, because if you use your time wisely you can learn a lot. Anyway, 5 days counts as a week, so that's pretty good. You've got a lot of good work experience placements, so I'm sure a few short but varied placements will be fine.

it'll count as what it is, some places you dont really need to spend more than a couple of days

Ah I can kinda understand, probably not many dairy farms around! Do you not have family you can go and stay with? Or even long lost friends?
I did S too! I even started "prépa bcpst" because I didn't get in first time round, so I know how horrible the French vet system is.. So are you completely French then?! There's another French girl on here who's in terminale S who might be applying next year, you should compare notes! (she's called Lex37)
