I've flushed tampons down the toilet for years now....maybe I should stop. But everything has always gone fine with me, nor has the toilet ever blocked up.

Perhaps we just have a really good toilet, perhaps my parents foresaw this, or perhaps it's actually ok.

It's not so much the toilet that's the problem, it's the sewers/drains and it's a real problem:

I would never put a tampon in when I'm not on my period as it would just hurt because I'd be far too dry. I always thought I had quite heavy periods but it turns out I only need regular tampons - in fact, I've been thinking about downgrading to see how that goes. I'd try starting with smaller ones if I were you because you probably wouldn't leak until you'd been wearing it for a few hours, even if it were too low an absorbency (unless you have Super Periods) - also, people are right in saying you won't leak in the pool. I think it's the water pressure. When I was a kid I used to swim without tampons in (though I wouldn't recommend it because you have to run to change as soon as you get out!).

I started with non-applicator tampons as the applicators always seemed really complicated and made the tampon look bigger, which frightened me! However, now I love applicators as they're much cleaner on the old fingers. I couldn't use tampons before I had sex, I tried several times but it just hurt and if the angle was wrong then I just couldn't get it right! A lot of girls don't have a problem though. Just relax and try different angles (you want to aim for the small of your back)

It annoys me when people say pads are disgusting. They're very absorbent so it's not like wetting yourself and sitting in it. And you can't control it even with tampons - the stuff is still flowing! Also, it could be called pretty wrong to shove a piece of compressed cotton with a load of horrid chemicals in it up yourself. Not to mention that you often get blood on your fingers. I use either and I can see that there are upsides and downsides to both.

This made me giggle lol

Agreed, Best to try both and see which is best for you.

Oh dear. Well I guess I'll know not to flush tampons away then. Meh. Ah well, used to it with pads I guess! (as in disposing them in bins. I've never flushed one down) But the issue sounds terrible :frown:

I'm always shocked that people swim without tampons. I seriously could never do that. My period definitely doesn't stop in water. I tend to get really heavy periods though...

Btw does it hurt to put a tampon in? :s-smilie: Or I guess, does it normally?

Reply 49

Nope doesnt hurt at all... at worst it could feel slightly uncomfortable but thats it...

Reply 50

Nah it shouldn't hurt, if it hurts don't try and force it too hard. Just take your time and relax. Move it about a bit when you're trying to put it in to try and find the best place to insert.
Once you get the hang of it there should be no pain felt at all.
Also, the tampon should NOT be felt once inserted. if you can feel it, you have not put it in far enough.
Like someone said, some people lift their leg up on the toilet seat, but you could also squat slightly. Just make sure you are completely relaxed about it and don't think about it hurting.

Also, it's not just during insertion you need to be relaxed...taking it out too! you need to pull it out slowly, or it might hurt or be difficult to get out.

I did experience some pain the first few times I tried, but that was because I wasn't putting them in correctly (i.e not far enough/ not at the right angle).

When inserted correctly it shouldn't hurt at. Also in answer to one of your other questions, I really wouldn't recommend putting a tampon in when you're not on your period - the dryness will make it really painful (and personally even with lubricant I wouldn't take the risk). In fact when I'm towards the end of my period I switch to pads, as even the lightest tampons don't get 'full up' after 8 hours so its a bit uncomfortable pulling them out (thats the only time I feel pain, but its really quite slight).

Read the instructions.... you can put on leg on top of the toilet seat and makes it easier.
I hate pads, I never use dthem after first period, yuck yuck yuck.
Make sur eyou push the tampon far enough up or else you can feel it.

Its perfectly ok to pee with one in, but personally I like to change because I don't like getting pee on the string. (but I'm weird like that).

I always change after poo....
You can pull the string towards your anus from behind or just pat the string after with toilet paper.
Also you change tampon after 4 hours or something like that

Reply 57

its recommended you change tampons every 8 hours or sooner.

personally, i'd buy tampons with an applicator, then if you find you cant use the applicator, take the tampon out and use it by itself.

i've always put tampons down the toilet...

I hold the string out of the way.

This thread is surprising me - I thought it was common knowledge that you're not meant to flush tampons!

The only time I find that putting tampons in hurts is when I've just taken another one out, so all the, um, moisture that was removed with the tampon hasn't been replaced yet. But before I lost my virginity I found tampons impossible because they just hurt every time. My hymen was a real pain (literally).

Ok I'm gonna sound stupid here, but basically I've never used a tampon in my entire life. I've always used pads. So now, I'm hoping to go swimming next week when my period's due and I'm wondering - a few questions:

How do you put a tampon in...?

And you flush the thing down the loo, don't you?

Could it leak? - is it 100% safe to swim with a tampon in?

And I know there're ones with applicators and ones without - which ones should I buy?

I'm a virgin as well btw so hymen and all is probably intact!

Cheers

How to put one in - depends which kind you use. There'll be leaflets in the boxes to tell you how, but just in case: for the applicator kind, hold on the ridged part of the applicator (the outside bit) and push the inside bit in. When the inside tube is fully inside the outside tube, pull and both tubes should come out, leaving the string hanging. With the non-applicator kind, just use your fingers. Buy both and see what's easiest for you.

Disposing of it - most loos have bins these days for easy disposal. I really don't like flushing it down the loo, not only in case it breaks the loo but also because it's bad for the environment. You can wrap it in a tissue before disposing of it (eww) or better, get some of those scented bags made specially for disposal. I use them and they're a godsend. I can't link to them for some reason but if you go to www.sainsburystoyou.com then go feminine hygiene > sanitary products then they're the second product of the three listed.

It's definitely 100% safe to swim with a tampon in. I've done it loads of times and never leaked, and I've been using tampons since I was 12.

It shouldn't hurt - if it is then you're probably using too big an absorbency of tampon for your flow.

You can try putting some in before your period for practice - I'd recommend using the miniature ones (they feel like you're shoving a pencil up inside you but it'll help you get the technique right) and of course don't leave them in too long.

I can see some people here have advised using KY jelly if you're practising when you're not on your period. If you're using the mini ones you shouldn't need this, and I personally don't like the idea of putting that stuff inside me, but you do whatever's easiest
