Tampons - confused!

There are usually instructions so follow them. You can flush the applicator if it's in cardboard, not if it's in plastic, and you can flush the tampon down the toilet too after it's been used (well it kind of depends what's at the other end of the pipe). It's 100% risk free until it's "full". I'd recommend to use the ones with applicators as they are much more easy to put on, especially if you're a "beginner", after a while using those without applicators will be ok but I still find applicators easier...
Whether you hymen is still intact does not only depends on whether you're a virgin or not and whether you've used tampons etc before, as it could be quite weak and 'break' when you do sports etc.

I mean, it is better not to flush it down the toilet, but I find it pretty disgusting to put it in the bin...

get a mirror and look down below, youll see two holes, you need to put it in the first one

Oh the lols. This sounds like a text-based RPG.

Just get the scented bags  Problem solved

And the bins in toilets are usually special designated bins for that kind of thing rather than being regular bins...the poor people emptying them probably know what they're letting themselves in for!

Use a bin if possible, because I think the flushed ones end up dumped in the sea :s-smilie: When you first start its better to use a lower absorbancy so you can get used to it. They do boxes of mixed absorbancies, so you could try them out. Theres lots of info in the leaflet that comes with them usually.

If you don't think you have a heavy flow, you probably don't. Women in general tend to overestimate their flow. If you're not sure what size, going for regular is probably safest. There are plenty of people who've used them whilst being virgins, so don't worry too much about that!

Eeesh it can hurt taking it out? :s-smilie: Hmm I dunno how weak/intact my hymen is, being a virgin AND I don't cycle  But there have been times when I've suspected my hymen has torn - didn't feel any pain, just saw very minor bits of blood once or twice then never again. Hmm guess I'll find out.

In any case, is there actually a difference in size for the minis and the regulars? The only difference the package says is a thinner applicator. I've bought both and think I'll try it when my period starts. I might even take a bath just to ensure it doesn't leak  So if it does, no one needs to know  (I guess I'm a little paranoid about that)

Only if you yank it out, so do it slowly haha.
I would recommend beginning with minis til you get the hang of putting it in, cause they're slightly smaller and might be easier for you to get in seeing as you are a virgin. and then start using the regular size once you are used to it.

Didn't you use a certain absorbency of pad? Well, after practicing with a small tampon, start off with the equivalent tampon and see how that is.

I've swum with tampons in and it's fine.

With pads it's always just been the regular ones. It's served me fine for the past 9 years and I hate the night pads but it's not heavy enough for that anyway. The small ones I don't use simply cus, well, it kinda saves money

Hmmm now it's a case of hopefully my hymen not being in the way and trying it out then! Should be fine - I mean, most women use it after all.

I might be wrong, but I think the hymen might be too far up to be much affected by tampons. I've used tampons since I was 12 and lost my virginity when I was almost 19. I'd have thought my hymen would have broken by then, but I definitely bled when I lost my virginity, indicating that my hymen was still intact when I first had sex, which seems slightly inconsistent with the sustained tampon usage.

No, the hymen is very close to the outside. But sometimes (quite normally, according to the O&G textbook I have next to me!) the vaginal opening is wide enough to get a tampon in without damaging the hymen.

Ah, that makes sense then

that would be dependant on the hymen type though wouldnt it? :s-smilie:

Yes - hence why I said sometimes.

I've been using tampons for the heaviest flow since I was eleven... Never had a single problem. And I was definitely a virgin at 11 lol

ah i apologise. i only saw the normally

Sorry to dig this up but another question - how much should you "force" the tampon in...? :s-smilie: It kinda hurts trying to get it in - haven't managed to get in further than half an index finger's length or less :s-smilie:

Should I just swim another time maybe? Or is this normal and I should keep trying?
