Beavers were reintroduced to Scotland in 2009 at Knapdale, after being extinct in the UK for several centuries. There was a trial period of a few years where the reintroduction and possible impacts were monitored. After that, the Scottish government considered the results of the trial.

Some also established themselves on the river Tay, possibly from escapes or illegal releases. This population will also be allowed to stay.

The result of that is that the beavers have been granted native species status, meaning their future in the country is secured and further reintroductions are likely to follow at some point.

Conservationists are obviously delighted with the news.
