Warm drinks are soothing for the throat - things like warm blackcurrant squash are good, because you're meant to avoid caffeine.

If you've had it so many times I'm really suprised they haven't suggested having them removed!

I know how you feel cos I have it too. It's the first time for me though, I've had it for a month already and a 10 day course of penicillin didn't even get rid of it. How gross is penicillin too, yuk :frown:

Hi, sorry I don't really have any advice, just sympathy for you! From October last year I used to get tonsilitis every couple of months and then since May I have it every 2/3 weeks!!!! I am on long term antibiotics and only now are they thinking of taking them out - its not an nice operation as an adult and they only take them out if they absolutely have to cos some people have trouble with bleeding too much after. Just wanted to say I know how you feel, rest up lots, gargle asprin in water (u don't have to swallow it) or salt water, and take ibuprofen and paracetamol (don't overdose though!). Hope this helps a bit and that you feel better soon!!!!

If you get it eight times a year+ then you qualify for a tonsilectomy (sp?). I had my tonsils out when I was 16 because I was getting it nine or ten times a year and the last time my temp. rose so high I got some kind of blood poisoning/septisimia and had a mini seizure.

The operation is worse the older you get as they have to cut more away but in the end it is worth it as you never get it again. I had a horrible time after it and starved for nearly two weeks but I'm glad I had it done, it is well worth it.

In the short term there is only one thing for it...ice cream

Just had really bad tonsills with glandular fever, looked like I had two golf balls in the back of my mouth and I used a throat spray called Difflam to help with the pain. Soluble paracetamol is good too and just plenty of fluids.

Thanks everyone for the advice.

Im on the Penicilin which tastes gross - nail polish as someone correctly explained it tasting of and im takin paracetamol and drinkin lots - so much tht im on n off the toilet:p: The ice cream im trying to avoid however, if I cant swallow anything else - tht I guess is my only alternative.

Has anyone ever had Phenoxymethylpenicllin prescribed to them??

If so, did you have any side affects??

Reply 11

Yes I've been prescribed it several times. I didn't have any side effects though. None that I noticed anyway! Why have you had side effects?

Reply 12

I used to get it really bad aswell, every couple of months, they gave me penacilling for it which went down a treat since i was allergic to it...
And i kept getting it and kept getting it, they gave me other antibiotics but i got so ill the one time i had to be rushed to hospital and then i had to have them taken out.
Id reccomend it  but if youre not there's two extremes, you can either drink warm drinks or ice cold drinks, depends on the pain i spose, but my boyfriend had it quite bad recently and was really ill with it and hot drinks were so much more painful than cold ones.
I think the cold ones numbed a bit aswell
Rest up and get well soon

Gargle salt water, seriously! Don't forgoet to spit it back out

I had mine out last year at age 17, best thing they ever did!

Reply 14

I was given them yesterday, took 2 and was sick during the night. Taken another one today and im ok, at the moment. Dr told me that I can take paracetamol with them as well so dont know if it was that that made me sick?????

Im drinkin hot and cold at the moment - seems to be working abit. I just want the headache to go first, followed by the sore throat and tempertaure as Im changin PJ's every night now:frown: :frown:

EDIT: Yes Im guna attempt the salt water remedy - hate it but its worked for most.

Another thing - did people find tht they were on n off the toilet alot due to penicillin - tht i mean no.2? Sorry to be descriptive.

ugh i feel sorry for you i had it for the first time this year, it was awful :frown: Get better soon , I know its only tonsilitis but I felt absolutely dreadful. Have lots of naps it helped me, and take painkillers whenever its safe to.

I'm in the third day of Tonsilitis, been to the doctors and been given that Phenoxymethylpenicllin stuff and some special stuff to gargle with when disolved in water. It's working pretty well, got rid of the fever and headaches now so just the throat jobby left! I've had no side effects at all and I expect to be fully recovered by Monday morning, quite a short timeline for tonsilitis I rekon!

Also, I've found that eating jelly is good while you have it, basically for the same reason as eating ice cream.

^^3days? snap!! Iv had it that long too.

What spray were u prescribed??

Reply 18

at least if ur in day 3 the shivers and vomiting should have stopped

Reply 19

Yes - your right, the shivers have gone, almost - I was only sick once because I took penicillin and paracetamol on an empty stomach - not a good idea for me anyway.
