It might sound silly, but the best thing for water retention is actually drinking more water! Oh, and cutting down on salt and sugar, and increasing the amount of protein you eat helps too
Short term
Holland and Barrett sell an absolute ton of diuretics - there's currently their own brand 'Water relief tablets' on offer (only £2.99 for 60). Ideally, go in and ask the product advisers which one is best suited for your needs. These tablets are generally best used for upto two weeks before you period starts!
Alternatively, grab a box of tea whilst you're there. Nettle/dandelion work an absolute treat!

It is?
Do explain...
If you're body doesn't have enough of something, like fat or water, it holds onto it

best thing for water retention is the likes of AquaBan which you can buy at the chemist! its NOT caused by drinking too much water. it can be caused by eating too much of the wrong foods, like those with a high salt content! also by not exercising enough! More than likely its just hormonal changes which is why you generally bloat coming up to your period. AquaBan comes in a herbal variety too which is a plus!

Liquid pushes liquid. If you're retaining water, try drinking more.

However, things like Aquaban are diuretics, and you can get them either in herbal or ordinary form. You can also get them from most shops - Boots, for example, has a large range of different products.
Also, tea and coffee are both diuretics.

Truly and simply - NO.
Whoever is preaching this liquid pushes liquid nonsense.
In hospital if someone is retaining water the first steps to do before even starting medication is to
1) Cut salt - low salt diet
2) Reduce fluid intake to 1.5litres a day.

Now in someone young you don't have to cut nearly as much fluid out, and its unlikely that they are truly 'retaining water' as it were.
Its just proof of a point - namely that you are wrong.

Y'know, that's funny, as it was in hospital that I was taught that.

I use AquaBan  I buy it from boots! Alot of women use this to get rid of excess water around that time of the month! It really works, i have been peeing all day lol. But make sure you drink enough when you are taking them because you may get a little dehydrated. I have been having headaches all day and that could be a symptom?? :frown:

By a silly person yes.

Oh, and what evidence do you have for that?
Or are you magically psychic, and know exactly which hospital I was in, which doctors and nutritionists I spoke to, and that they are, in fact, silly?

Obviously, it does depend on the cause of the water retention, and I don't deny the cutting out of the salt, but even so, fluid pushes fluid.

Its not magic love, its education.

Fluid pushes fluid...rubbish.
Either the people you spoke to are silly, or you misunderstand. In either case I'm not using old wives tales, i'm stating medical fact. If you are retaining water, you do not get rid of it by increasing your water intake.

So cutting salt instake alone should do it? No need to reduce fluid intake.

At your age..?
I doubt you would even know what water retention really was. Bloated would probably be more the thing for young people.

Even if you were a tiny bit oedematous, in under30 year olds i would say the course would be much more likely be steroids (whether abuse or medication) than poor kidney function compounded by excess salt.
Surely it depends on what causes the water retention, anyway?

Water retention had always been a problem for me. Despite working out five times a week my body weight used to fluctuate as much as ten pounds. Just when I accepted this fluctuation as part of my make-up, I heard about Expelis so I tried it thinking I had nothing to lose (or did I?). I began using Expelis two months before my daughter’s wedding and the results have been tremendous. My weight no longer fluctuates
I also cheked expelis reviews before buying.
