morton house/carnatic halls...

got my offer for accomodation in today :frown:

- 3 miles away from the madness of the city centre lol...not impressed :frown:

- does anybody have any experience with these halls? what are they like??

I was in Morton in my first year, '05-'06, and there are good points and bad points about it.

Bad points: (there aren't many)
- It's not the most modern of halls. But come on, u are living in halls, does it really matter?
- You have to share bathrooms with more people than normal. But wear flip flops in the shower and you will be fine.

Good points:
- You don't have wardens living in your halls- you are completely independent, unlike all the other halls. They live down the road.
- Because the halls aren't as popular as the others, you can leave all your stuff there over christmas and easter. All the other halls u have to move all your stuff out over holidays for the conferences, but living in Morton is really good if u wanna leave it at uni, or if u live far away like i did.
- The hall is at the end of Carnatic House that no-one goes down, so you don't usually have to queue long for dinner.
- The year i was there, everyone in Morton was really close because it is one of the smaller halls. So you will get to know a lot of people very quickly.

This is a quick list off the top of my head- if i think of more things then i will add them. Trust me, i dreaded going to Morton before i got there, but i wouldn't have lived anywhere else now, looking back on it!

EDIT- just read your bit about living out of town- get a bus pass. The buses start at Carnatic every morning so Greenbank are always left out in the cold! Another good thing about Carnatic. Also, Carnatic isn't far from Mossley Hill train station (about a 10 minute walk) which takes you directly to Lime Street Station in 8 minutes. So if u don't fancy a bus, or u just wanna go into town, use the train cos it's cheaper.

Oh yeh and buy a mirror cos the rooms in Morton don't have them.

- much appreciated.... about busses/trains though...do they come often? like, is it easy to get to and from the centre...and what about after a night out? would i have to get a taxi? - only 3 weeks away now :biggrin:

Trains run until about 11pm.

Buses didn't run very often whe i was there but i've heard now that they are 24 hour and come about every 15-20 minutes. They drop u off right in town in the evening as well, by the Wetherspoons on Great Charlotte Street.

If you do want to get a taxi be prepared to pay about £20 to get back to halls. Not advised!

When did you pay £20!?!? Most I payed was £10 and that was at their higher rate as well.

Ha ha probably got ripped off in freshers week in 1st year, took us via Toxteth on the way home. Avoid that place like the plague!

Oh right. Ell on the average night out - non friday/saturday with 4 or 5 mates you wouldnt be paying more than £3 each.

oh my god. 20 quid for a taxi my arse.

livin at carnatic is ***** sick. soooooo much fun. its doesnt matter that ur out of town cos so is evrybody else. its mostly john moores ppl that liv in town n theyr a whole difrent bunch ne way. evry night evrybody gets on the legendary 699 wen the carni bar closes n heads into town. the bus wil get that busy at peak times you have to stand up n evry1s singin n chantin n its just wikid.

just wait til you learn all the chants. its us 2nd years that av gota teach you em. you'll thank god u rnt livin at greenbank lol. the carni bar is a great crack. just cos evry1 goes in ther n you no evry1 n its safe n cool. theres bout 1200 ppl livin at carnatic so thers loadsa ppl. the food in the canteen fing is good i always thort considerin how many ppl they have to cook for. its a good laff ne way n wel sociable goin up ther evry teatime n seein evry1.

honestly do not worry bout not bein in town. morton is the smallest hall but you'l mix about evrywhere n its so not a problem. n i dnt think you need to wear flip flops in the shower. the ppl you live wiv become ur mates n u no evryfin about each uva n share evryfin. no need to b prudish about it. if you get a verruca. so ***** wot.

enjoy it ne ways. first year at carnatic woz the best. you'l never forget it. im guna miss it to hell. you'll never liv in a place like university halls ever agen and carnatic is up ther wi the best of em im sure
