Careers in financial markets/macroeconomics?

Hi,
I'm going to be starting a degree in economics and econometrics at a RG university next year. I'm very interested in macroeconomics and the global markets for FX, commodities, anything that's affected by geopolitics and central bank policies. I was thinking of a career as a trader but after some research I've realised that it's not really a career with a lot of potential due to automation and stuff.

However, I'm very interested in financial markets and was thinking- what similar careers are there? To be honest I'm not really into becoming an economist since you need a PhD.
