Some of these were acclaimed at the time, and have been forgotten since, others have never really been recognised fully.

1. Casino
2. The Boys from Brazil
3. The Killing Fields
4. Downfall
5. Amistad

Any other suggestions?

SLEUTH - one of the best films I have ever seen yet never ever seen it mentioned anywhere in the media.

AMADEUS - probably one of the best oscar winnign films but also very un-menioned.

9/10 for both from me.

The Machinist. Not underrated when you look at the score on IMDB, but it's ver under exposed. I don't think any of my friends have seen it.
Pierrepoint: The Last Hangman aswell, for the same reasons.

lol, you are cracking me up today - its fairly recent.

Also I wouldn't say Fight Club is underrated - its both popular and rated very highly - certainly in the circles I move in...

Empire of the Sun - 1987 - Steven Spielberg.

I wouldn't say it's the best film he's made but it has sunk down on Speilberg's list of classics. Christian Bale puts in a outstanding performance and there are of course the classic poignant moments, backed by choir boys singing in latin, which are so damn manipulative but can still make me cry...

I saw Fight Club when I was about 10 haha. Don't remember much except the big twist and lots of fighting.
I love Fear & Loathing, would agree that it's underrated with the general public.
Oh and The Machinist was awesome - quite dark and not much fun but very good.

Equilibrium is horribly under-rated - people instantly dismissed it as a Matrix rip-off (without, interestingly, dismissing The Matrix as an Akira rip-off...); when in fact it was far more interesting film then it was given credit for. No, it's not the greatest film ever, but it's damn good fun, and actually vaguely interesting.

Equilibrium is awesome. I made the mistake of watching it when I was too tired the first time and said I didn't like it, but after seeing it again recently, I've seen the light :p:
