Clicky bones

Basically, my bones (or rather, my joints) click alll the time. Mainly it's my knees, my ankles, my elbows, sometimes my wrists, and my hips. Occasionally it's painful, but mostly it's just very noisy :frown:

My knees even click when I push the pedals while driving!!

I have a good diet - I'm vegetarian, but I get lots of protein and all the other food group. I always have my 5 a day etc!! I'm not very sporty, but I do walk quite a bit, and quite quickly, which is meant to be good for you. I never crack my fingers or anything like that... so I'm not clicking my bones on purpose ever.

I was wondering what people would advise to try to stop the clicking from happening, since I can't imagine it's very healthy for my bones :frown:

Thanks
Rosie

If you're still growing, it could just be that. My joints used to do the same.
Otherwise, maybe it could be some form of arthritis, particularly if there's pain at all?

My knee has started doing the same all of a sudden, it started hurting to put pressure on in certain positions. Now every time i bend it then straighten it, it clicks.

I have a feeling it's a cartillage thing, for me. But for you, no idea...if it hurts go see a doctor. i'm lucky one of my friends does Physio at uni...if you know any Physio's at your uni (if you go) ask them.

It happens to me all the time, mainly in me knees, hips and ankles. Granted my ankle only started clicking since I broke it...but it still clicks. My dad has severe arthritis so I think it is a sign of that coming on in me.

I click huge amounts also... I can click every vertabre from top of neck to base of spine, my knuckles click and also the middle joint on my fingers, toes, ancles, knees (particularly when straightening them), elbows and shoulders in the morning.
I agree it's rarely painful, but is loud.
I've had quite extensive physiotherapy - different people over about 4 years, for a judo accident on one of my vertabre, and all say that there's nothing to be worried about. I've had full body MRI scans and also every scan on my knee that pretty much exists ever, and there is no problem. They just click! I've had blood tests for arthritis and tested for things like fibromyalgia, but there is nothing clinically wrong. No one has ever been concerned or told me there were dangers with the amount of clicking I do.

I also have a good diet, I'm not vegetarian but I eat healthily including lots of calcium, and I'm pretty sporty, have been national in two sports and I don't find that clicking holds me back at all. I actually find clicking loosens whichever joint is concerned, and if often happens unintentionally. However, I do sometimes have joint issues, and feel like I want to click the joint to relieve the pain, so it's not perfect - it seems to me that once one of my joints starts clicking it will continue to do so, and almost 'needs' to for full mobility/rotation.
When I try not to click my neck it feels stiffer and more tender than relieving it by clicking it a few times on each side.

My knees, wrists, neck, shoulders, and finger and toe joints all click. It doesnt give me any pain, when i was younger my knees did hurt sometimes but i think that was more growing pains than anything serious. I've never been to the doctor about it because i dont think its anything to worry about, I know a lot of people (all female) my age who's joints click, or had it when they were younger but have grown out of it. If it's giving you pain then it is probarbly a good idea to see a doctor about it, but otherwise its pretty normal.

its sort of like bubbles popping as u squeeze. like bubble wrap!
My doctors told me its nothing to worry about, nothing to stop it.
So just ignore it!

Most people have "clicky" joints and can just be due to ligaments moving from one position to another during normal movement. The fact that you do a lot of fast walking, probably just makes it more obvious than it would be otherwise. If it hurts, see your doctor, but it's probably nothing to worry about. Can be cartilage damage, lax ligaments etc...I highly doubt it's arthritis...

Everything in my body clicks. A lot. And I feel the need to click them intentionally on a very regular basis. I also get lower back ache and aches around my neck area regularly, and after writing for a while, my fingers ache like hell.

I have exactually the same problem. The pain can be so bad that I went to my doctors, they sent me for a scan :s-smilie: which came back fine. I'm 80% it's my cartillage but I'm finding it hard to convince my doctor of the possibilities.

That sounds like cartilage problem, usually (but not always) associated with sports or trauma.

Key questions include - do you have full movement in all directions, do you have pain at rest, does the joint 'catch' as you move it?

See your GP and expect referral for MRI +/- arthroscopy, although that depends on the actual clinical presentation and the resources available.

Funny you say that as I used to do Cross Country Running, I've told my doctor that yet he still won't listen.. :s-smilie:

Ooh, all of me clicks - just clicked my fingers now lol. My elbows, my wrists, my fingers, the base of my back, my hips, my knees, my ankles, my toes! It's so loud too! The other day I knelt down to pick up something and was met with a stare and, "Was that your KNEES?!" I don't think there's a great deal that can be done about it - maybe glucosamine and chondroitin supplements would help, and fish oils (but if you're veggie you probably wouldn't want to take those). Supposedly it's an old wives' tale that cracking your fingers leads to arthritis - well that's what I always say when I get told off for doing it! - but there isn't really anything you can do about it, it's just a natural thing I suppose. It's something like when you get a pocket of air accumulating in a joint...I don't know, but it just happens!

I do dance and have had lessons on this so i hope my info is helpful!...clicking joints is usually the changing of air pressure in the joint, it's most common in the knees.. if you're very clicky you should eat oily fish and foods that are good for your joints, if you're worried though ask your doctor because they might be able to tell you of other remedies that can help. Sounds like an obvious answer but in most cases excersise helps!
