It depends what you get tested for - i had a hep B antibody test, so they only need one bottle. If your having multiple things tested for they need several bottles. Your flatmate may not have known.

She told me later that when she had it done she had 3 taken from her, she just told me one so I wouldn't freak out as much.

well... that. I mean im sat in a drab nurses office. The most exciting thing IS the blood being sucked out of my arm, so hell, im going to watch it. Unless the nurse is hot, which never happens outside of pornos (and i have my doubts as to wether they are relaly nurses anyway :hmmm:

I think it only really hurts if you're afraid of needles. (I am, so they realy hurt for me.)

I can't really remember what happens, but if you tell them you're a bit nervous they will be able to help you. They'll talk you through it, one lady had a race with me as to who could count to 100 fastest, and it didnt hurt at all. But she might've only done that because I was 10. :P

Try not to worry too much, they dont last very long.

I'm a recovering needlephobic, and I had my first ever blood test about a month ago. I was really REALLY nervous about it beforehand, but luckily the nurses at my health centre know how much of a nuisance I am and are really good at dealing with it, so they talked me through the process (tourniquet on, needle in, vial on, blood goes in, needle comes out, hurts a wee bit, plaster on and there's your lollipop!), and got one nurse to distract me while the other did the needle. Trouble was, I caught sight of the needle once the tourniquet was on and panicked, and by the time I'd calmed down enough to continue, my arm had gone purple and they couldn't get any blood out so had to start again. They only took one vial (= one small syringe-full).
They'll usually use a green needle which looks rather thick and worrying, but it's actually designed not to put too much pressure on the vein, so it won't hurt as much. When they finally got some blood out of me, they had to use a narrower (black) needle which did sting rather more, but it's nothing unbearable. The bit which hurt most was the needle coming out at the end, but again, it's tolerable (a small sting, and an 'ouch!'). I had a Hep B booster the same day and that stung more than the blood test did!
The thing to remember is that it'll all be over in under a minute, and just look away and bite your lip. Oh, and try not to panic at them preparing your arm, that's the worst bit; just let them get on with it, they're professionals and will try not to hurt you. Don't forget to ask them for a lollipop :smile:

Didn't find it too bad. I didn't actually notice she was doing it - I was waiting for the pain to start and all of a sudden, the nurse said 'It's done'. I was like ' :eek:

I can finally eat now!

Personally mine really hurt :frown:

but i was very very ill at the time and the nurse couldn't withdraw enough blood from my arm so had to use a baby needle in the other arm... ouch I nearly fainted :frown:

but i did have suspected malaria so i have reasons for being a wuss! :biggrin:

My blood tests for glandular fever really hurt but only because I had such a bad rash that they couldn't find any veins. I had a a nurse and 2 doctors repeatedly stab both arms with needles but not get any blood so after 20 minutes another doctor came and used a wrist vein instead which does hurt.

Having the blood taken is fine. It is when they inject things into me that I worry!!

i had a blood test the other day. they couldn't find my vein.. lol. it hurt, but i'm not used to them. i now have a nice bruise and a scratch on my skin. i do not like blood tests, but it's interesting to watch the blood pour out of you into one of those little test tube things.. mmm blood.. lol!

Having injections is always more painful that blood tests because their pushing chemicals into your muscle.

The worst thing to do it worry about it because that makes your muscles tense, which makes it hurt.

I've done thousands of blood tests (I'm a phlebotomist!) and have never had anyone actually faint on me. Some close-calls, but no one actually going out. The only time something like that happened was when I was relatively new in training and had to deal with the worse needle-phobe I've ever come across who was screaming and thrashing around. Then it was me who keeled over :biggrin:

It wasn't nice.

Well done Brimstone! Hope you won't have to worry so much next time! You'll be the Ruler of all Blood Tests! Hehe!
