The Student Room Group
i'd be interested in this too.

it sounds too good to be true though, and sounds too hard to really do (i mean how would they know? what if your blood parents weren't known, or your father was "unknown" etc) i don't think it's true....
I applied for every free bit of money I could have got my hands on last year, but never even came across questions asking if my parents had been in higher education.

Would have wanted it though...

My Mom went to University when she was around 35, so I wouldn't get it anyway.

Just out of interest, where did you look for grants etc other than HE Maintenance?

Well, my school did all the leg work really.

I obviously applied to the SLC, and we also had a bursary come through directly from the Government (or a company detached from the SLC). I can't remember if that was from a seperate form or if that was sent from the original form I filled it, but anyway, it was barely anything anyway.

I was also encouraged to investigate what my Uni had to offer. So asked for various info, as they do their own bursaries and scholarships.
I wasn't expecting much, but it was a lot more than I was expecting (though didn't get a scholarship).

Hope that helped a little (although my memory on such things is a bit suspect :s-smilie: i'm rubbish with forms at the best of times  )

Thanks for the info, but I suspect my friend has just heard of something that doesn't exist with this grant =/ Wish it were true, though =(

Some universities give bursaries to people who are the first in their family to go to uni. It is part of an initiative to encourage students from different backgrounds and to open up higher education to those who would not normally consider it.
If you have a uni place or a particular course/uni in mind it would be worth making enquiries whether or not they offer this financial assistance.
It is not government funded and not universally available.
The Student Loan lot dont offer anything, but some unis do ask and some reward as part of widening partnership schemes.

You will have probably also been asked when you filled in your UCAS, although that is for data collection only
I have heard of this before too but never followed it up.
Would be a good incentive I feel, although not particually fair.
I would be bloody grateful for it though seeing as Ill be the first in the family to go

The scheme was run by Aimhigher for science and technology courses in the east midlands. Entry has closed for 2007 80 places were awarded with a further 120 in 2008.

You were given 3k total, 1k every year which did not need to be paid back.

The criteria were something like

First in family.
Low income.
Courses not usually for your gender eg women to engineering)
Exceptional student.

The awards were called EMSTAs i think

Hope thats some help
