Pros and cons of Plymouth University

Hi 😊

Hoping that some current and former students can share their experiences of studying at this university?

Thank you!
Hi UniStudent2017,

I did my undergrad and masters here, and I really loved it.

The staff genuinely cared about us doing well, they pushed us when we need it but knew when to let us get on with things. The campus is really cool and there's always weird and wonderful stuff going on, like jousting and silent discos in the Roland Levinsky Building?!
The con for me was also one of the pluses, being near the sea, Cornwall and Dartmoor when the weather is good there's too much fun to be had elsewhere so it can be really hard making yourself go to the library!
But if you're a nightowl you can study in the evenings anyway, the library is 24/7 so you could theoretically enjoy the sun all day and just study when it gets dark!

Hope this helps

Third year environmental scientist!

Pros: Campus has everything literally on its doorstep. Train station, shopping, sea front- it's all there, right within walking distance or a stone's throw.
Plenty of support if you need it, e.g. DAS
Friendly staff
Right near Dartmoor, Cornwall and the beauty of the South Devon countryside
Nice science labs
They're currently spending a lot of money on rejuvenating the library (it needed it!)

Cons: Quite a small campus
Their need to spend £100,000 on a handful of graduation chairs and £300,000 on a giant TV screen
Organisation skills can sometimes leave a lot to be desired

I love it here, and I fully plan on staying on for a Masters next year!

By lack of organisational skills do you mean disorganised a lot of the time for lots of different things or referring to cancelled lectures or what? Glad to hear you are enjoying your time there, Plymouth is one of my top choices 😊

Thanks for the insight,

You haven't said what you studied but did you find that you had a lot of support from the uni/course/lecturers helping you towards getting work experience/a placement and a job after graduating?

Hello again

You're right, no I didn't! I did a BA (Hons) in Fine Art and Art History. As part of my undergraduate I worked for the uni as a student ambassador and at various events, I also did an internship as part of my degree so I got work experience and some marks toward my final grade all in one, which was ideal! The uni really encourage students to do work placements and most degrees have an internship/placement built into the degree itself. There's also faculty specific careers fairs throughout the year where you can get tips and speak to employers.

I did my masters in Art History afterwards and my thesis supervisor has written me references, emailed me opportunities and helped give me advice about what to do next, I finished that over the summer and she's still helping me now that I'm thinking about PhD.

The careers hub on campus also support you after you graduate and can offer help with CV's, mock interviews and job hunting, so you're not just left on your own!

In the meantime I'm an paid intern at the university, and I get to do lots of creative work and they're teaching me things like how to run photoshoots, how to use excel (I hadn't used a spreadsheet since GCSE!), I get to work on events, speak to new students like you and it's really fun and I learn something everyday.

I have always really felt like the Uni has had my back and can't thank them enough. So in short yeah, lots of support!

All the best

Thanks everyone so far for your views 😊 Anyone else have any experiences to share? I know it will vary from course to course but just trying to get a good all round view of the university 😊

How do you find the teaching quality, contact hours, careers services, library facilities, student union and events, Plymouth as a place to live etc?

The open day was my favourite out of all the universities and I will be attending an applicant day next year which I am looking forward to but just want some current/former student views to help me towards my decision making between Plymouth and another university I am looking to study at.

Thanks!
Do you find studying on campus is quite quiet and chilled

Do you find studying on campus is quite quiet and chilled

Hi there! 😊

I'm a current Plymouth student and love the atmosphere when studying on campus. There is a definite quiet and chilled vibe across many of the campus cafés, study spaces, and green spaces like Drake's gardens and the reservoir on campus. 🌳

We also have a brand new campus park opening soon, which will be a super nice and relaxed space for some time away from lectures as a space to chill, socialise, have lunch, or study in the sun! 🌼

There's definitely something for everyone though and spaces like the SU or library can have a bit more of an atmosphere at certain times like the evenings or exam seasons, so there are plenty of different spaces depending on where you like to study best, with bookable private quiet study rooms available too.

Hope this helps and if you have any more questions feel free to reach out! 😁

i enjoyed it. was nice to have something to focus on and to get some independance. i found it hard socially though due to being a bit older and me being a bit weird. but thankfully it doesnt really matter for me as im mostly fine being alone
