I think £10 a week would be pushing it. I'm pretty much planning to spend £70-80 a week (£30 for food, £50 for socialising), however some weeks i may not spend any more than £50, i.e during exams.

Ok, union food is absolutely foul unless you're very careful, but it's cheap. I'd stay clear of the transparent-chicken-chunk selling Sandwich shop, although they do give out free fruit when you buy something. The MDH (main dining hall) is normally reasonably good food, kinda like school dinners, and the price isn't bad, say around £3-4.

It also depends where you live - if you're near college, say Beit, the closest supermarkets are Waitrose and an overpriced Tesco Express on Gloucester Road - there's a Sainsbury's but it's not for the lazy. If you ever go out, you'll spend money, it's guaranteed :p:

Honestly I've spent in excess of £100 in a week before just on food and transport, but then again I did buy some funky food :s-smilie:

I once bought 10 pizza express pizzas from Waitrose in one go....

I was talking about eating out as well - Hard Rock Café: not cheap (except on their birthday when everything costs pennies but you have to queue all day :biggrin:)

Well in my 1st year I didnt keep count of my expenses but thinking about it, weekly expense would make sense;

travelling; £20
food&drink; £20, maybe less.
cigerettes; £5
books & others; £10
.............= £55

And that seems reasonable thank heavens I'm not into gambling or clubbing!
Hey anyone know of any good (and reasonably priced) Fish & Chips restaurants nearby Imperial College?

Are there any Fish and Chips stuff at Imperial? (food stall, shops, whatever...)

It was about 30mins away from the halls, but I'm not living in halls this time and sadly enough my accomodation isn't sorted yet -which I'm now panicking about.

I just get the weekly oyster card for £20, which should be only £11 if you have that student travel card.

Yea, as soon as we arrive in London, we should go to this office and our records stamped so we can have a student oyster card issued. U can either have a monthly student oyster card, a weekly one or a yearly one. Depends on how much you'll be traveling around, where you live etc. It's really worth it if u get the monthly one with zones 1-2 it costs you arout 2 quid a day to travel anywhere between zones 1 and 2. why would u want zones 3-6 anyway? you can access anything anywhere in zones 1 and 2.
at least thats my humble opinion :wink:

you need to upload a pic and pay 5 pounds

for ppl who rnt from london, this booklet is quite useful. its all abt the travel cost in london: http://www.tfl.gov.uk/assets/downloads/TfL-Fares-April-2007.pdf

back to the main topic, i am planning to spend 50 pounds a week. 15-20 on food 20-25 on sociallising and ard 10 on travelling....i think im gonna get the bus pass....

There is a fish and chip shop on gloucester road, say 10 mins walk from the edge of campus, but its *****e. Really thin chips that they dont cook for long enough, minute portions, NO GRAVY!!! they say they advertise curry sauce but have never had it when i've been in. in fact, i don't think i've seen a decent chippy in london.

Kebabs however are a different kettle of fish, 10 mins walk to just past south ken station there's a little kebab shop called bosphorous which is a bit pricey £5-ish for a kebab, but really is good stuff.

The sandwhich shop's £1 sausage baguettes should be a staple food for all carnivorous imperial students,
