People seem to be unaware of how much harm can be done by betrayal. For example if the queen/PM got assassinated and we caught the people who paid for it, shouldn't we hang any British accomplices in that situation?

No. There is no reason why someone murdering the PM or the queen should be punished more severely than any other murderer.

The life of a politician or royal is not worth more than the life of a common man these days, for which I am grateful.

In some cases the assassin may be an agent of an institution or a foreign nation, in this case there is the additional quality of an attack against UK as a nation, but that should have no impact on the assassin's punishment.

Death penalty is generally a bad idea IMO because it is non-retractable, and no conviction can determine someones guilt beyond any doubt, especially if the convicted denies doing the deed.

There have been cases where someone is convicted and punished for murder on the basis of the available evidence, and years later new evidence surfaces and his innocence is proven.

If the death penalty has been applied, it was basically state-sponsored murder, but if he has gone to jail, there is a chance for the government to make up for their mistake and the convict to live a normal life, however short it may be.

No.
There is a possible justification for the death penalty for treason independent of any death penalty for murder but the OP has chosen a very poor illustration.

The leader of an insurrectionist movement may pose a threat to the security of the state by their very existence. In that case imprisonment is not a sufficient safeguard.

If you think of Mary Queen of Scots or the Duke of Monmouth they were rival sovereigns so long as they lived. In modern times, the Apartheid regime in South Africa did not execute Mandela and ultimately it fell because of him. It is unlikely the movement would have held together if he had been hanged. It would have split into rival factions.

The post-war French state felt powerful enough not to hang Petain but it was touch and go.

Imagine a scenario where Nigel Farage led a coup attempt supported by 20% of the army and substantial elements of other public services. The coup is put down. What do you then do with Farage?

The real reason we do not a death penalty for treason, is the utter unlikelihood of the above situation. No-one seriously thinks that such a coup attempt could occur yet that is the nearest to plausibility for any destabilising scenario. No Islamic propagandist has anywhere near the support necessary to destabilise the British state.

Other countries with less stable regimes may have a justification for executing traitors. Trinidad found itself imprisoning coup attempt leaders some years ago. In a small country they continue to destabilise the government.

An arbitrary scenario. No. Capital punishment is a barbaric practice that belongs in the cesspools of history.

Farage will make them do more with less, yes they will have an extra workload but they should find efficiency savings not ask for money from the taxpayer, UKIP are gong to cut taxes anyway like Trump.

it's a metaphor and there's a reason why it's heavily used: because it has a strong stench of truth.

Oh yes, yes indeed. Let's go back to the good old days. The prospect of a nice hanging would be enough to put anyone off committing treason.
