hi, what is the difference between the internal and external intercostal muscles?

When the internal ones contract, they move inwards and downwards. When the external muscles contract, they move upwards and outwards.
Also whenever one of these muscles contract, the other relaxes i.e. They are antagonistic.
So when breathing in, the internal muscles relax and external muscles contract. Vice verse for breathing out.
