It's one year to do an MA at an english university. And then a further 3 years for a PhD, although, if your topic at MA is strong enough, at some uni's you can transfer directly into the second year of a PhD.

But there's all sorts of variations on that. But PhD is definately a minimum of 3 years.

Does it not vary from course to course? It would also depend on whether it would be a full time or part time.

no i'm pretty sure its set FT Masters (MA,Msc, LLM) are 1yr and FT Doctorate (PhD, DPhil, LLD etc) is 3yr.

but part times your pretty unrestricted it took my moms friend 5yrs to do her masters part time (altho she did stop to have a baby and stuff lol) and another friend 8yrs to do her PhD (again stopped for a bit to have two children lol) but its worth it in the end

There are some MAs that last 2 years full time but the bulk are only 1.

PhDs vary between 3 and 4 years minimum length usually depending on the funding council for the subject (some specify 4 years minimum)

    It depends on the course.

Usually masters last one year, not really sure on PhDs, probably 3-4 years.
