    Yo!

I just bought a nice shiny new laptop (all clap please)

Just wondering what the firewalls are like on campus, I'm gonna assume that torrents and limewire won't be usable. However, can people play games online?

My sister isn't sure since she doesnt play any, but she said there was something that she could download stuff on (called losernet or something haha, i dunno)

thanks... and i havent had my accomodation pack since crewe is still having "postal strikes".

I seem to remember that games like World of Warcraft and stuff don't work. I don't really know because I've never played them, but some of them definitely don't work because they use too much bandwidth. You should be able to find out more by searching on here because a while back some people from ISS were on here answering a thread about IT questions. Also, try www.lancs.ac.uk/iss and see if it says anything on there.
You can download stuff using OurTunes and Lusernet within the uni network. The ISS did send around notices last year saying that they'd been contacted by people threatening to investigate and sue people illegally downloading though. Bit iffy.

LuserNet is a god send, its peer to peer with people on your part of the network! Lots of great stuff on there!
And games wise, some work others don't. My mates WoW did work, so did Americas Army (but without a server list, so had to enter IP) and a few others, but others games such as C&C: Tiberium Wars doesn't work.
    So all depends really!

For things that don't work normally (torrents, games, etc) you can set up a VPN, which is basically renting a server and tunnelling information so as to bypass the uni firewall.

One of my friends had it last year, was renting a server in Europe for around 3 Euros a week or so and he's no big techie either, so should be simple enough fo people to set up!

Is there a limit to the amount you're allowed to download off Lusernet?

    I like my telly programs.....

Apparently new Macs work fine, so I'm happy!

No limit, just download everything, films take a matter of minutes.

I'd just stick to the millions of tv links sites out there though really for tv shows.

Also, porn isn't blocked ;happy2; great success

Only if you can figure out how to do it
It's caused a lot of people a lot of problems, but it is technically possible if you find someone who knows how to sort it out. (i don't by the way, i'm more of a wii man)

i know a bit, Guild Wars i doubt would work, i didn't bother taking mine. BF2 might but not too sure. CSS does cause i have that but don't like it, but that definatly worked last year!

You can get on XBox Live, i did it for my mates 360, its not that complicated.
