I just wanted to know if there are opportunities to study reptiles at vet school, for example do any of the vet school's teaching hospitals have reptile centres? Or would that be part of your own EMS? Im interested in them and have been reading some books but have yet to see any while on work experience.

Heya, I'm working at a wildlife sanctuary and they have a few abandoned reptiles that they look after. They even had crocodiles at one point! So you can tailor a little bit of your PCEMS to things like reptiles if you wish.

Liverpool also has a module in 2nd year called diverse species and some of that involves reptiles. Looking forward to learning a bit more about them.

I'm interested in reptiles too. Luckily the mixed practice I've done work exp on specialises in exotics. Last time I was there, there were 16 tortoise inpatients! lol

You will need to study exotics (which include reptiles & small mammals) in vet school. Exotics would be a part of Small Animals, ie. in terms of clinical years, it'll be in the small animal hospital of the vet school.

Im in the middle of my 2nd week in a reptile placement and im handling everything cleanin out the baby baby snakes every morning and i still aint been bitten. Im loving it there and she has sorta offered me a part-time job so going to have to think bout the commitment etc.. Yeah the lady who owns the place served a customer some pinkies (small mice for those of you non reptiley people) and then he wanted to see the new cornsnakes she had got in (adults) and it was just movin about and she just calmly said to me "would you ming getting me a tissue"- The snake had smelt her hands and didnt strike at her just decided to chomp/munch/chew/nibble (call it what you want it was trying to eat her ) it was the skin part between her thumb and 1st finger and i was just like... oww does that hurt...!? After the customer left she pulled out the snakes needle sharp tooth- may have only been couple of mm long but still need sharp and painful!!! I aint going to get bit!!

    I hope not . I hate them!

I think rabbits might as well be exotics because a lot of vets aren't very clear on the correct handling or care of them. I've seen them kept in cattery cages...surrounded by predatory animals and within hearing range of the kennels. I do think their exotic status is amusing though!

yep me again and on my last day i got bitten! and it was by not the nicest the little cornsnakes never bit me even the tarantulas and stuff never bit me.... This guy brought in his prize position adult mexican black kingsnake to show the owner!! yep we are all just holding it and he drops in she bit him yesterday (but thats ok coz he was feeding her at the time) and so its just glidin through my hands and it stops and starts licking my finger (doesn't turn into an 's' shape like it would if it was going to strike me) my thoughts now are just 'oh i dont like this' so i slowly try to move and encourage it to go lick something else and thats when it decided to taste me it bit me and i didnt quite react til i felt the teeth leave my skin and boy then did i react... yep i threw it just threw his precious snake luckily it landed in somebodys hands but i just couldn't stop crying it wasnt coz it hurt that much it was just that i was in shock!

The National Stud would be amazing- what an opportunity. I thought the stallions at my stud were impressive! I've still got 7 days this summer and hopefully just 2 at Christmas and then I'll be done. Going to a wildlife sanctuary this weekend and it's on the site of an old safari park so it inherited the tigers and lions and stuff. There's loads of unusual rescued animals there cause the laws against exotics are different in NI to the rest of the UK so really looking forward to it Rescue-ing crocs from peoples' bathtubs etc lol. Hope you've had a good summer!
