Having problems with Q2b. I think I've worked out the time taken to return from where it was released from. No idea what it's asking me.

Don't know why you think it's 3.6m at v_max.

From release, the mass will travel 1m under SHM until the string goes slack, then 1.6m to O, then carry on past O for another 1.6m until the string becomes taut again, then 1m under SHM until it comes to rest on the opposite side of O. Then the whole process is reversed until the mass comes back to its starting point.

Thank you so much, I misunderstood what happens when the string goes slack. I thought it would move at V_max and stop at o then change directions hence the 3.6m. I'm self teaching so this isn't the first time something like this has happened. Thank you very very much.

You're welcome. This sort of question has appeared on here several times over the years - it's no disgrace to struggle with it, particularly when you are self teaching.
