Harper Lee presents Calpurnia as a fair, black, African-American housekeeper for the Finch family, who has hidden essential roles in the plot of the novel. This is demonstrated by Atticus trusting Calpurnia to support him and be the key maternal figure for Jem and Scout, enabling her to aid in their education. Through Calpurnia, we also understand more about the prejudice from both black and white communities, allowing us to learn about her resilient character and the true, cohesive nature of the coloured race.
