Nope, I haven't sorted out how I'll be getting there at all. In fact, I haven't even sent Durham my results yet. I should really do that soon, shouldn't I?

Possibly a good idea!

No, you can get your room early for at least some colleges.

I have just had the standard confirmation of offer pack through my door this morning. One of the things in there was a form to request your room early. Food is availible, but if I am going to be up early, I will probably want the freedom that comes from eating out, so I don't have to race back to catch dinner for at least those first few days.

The full contents of the pack from Trevs are as follows. Other colleges will probably send out very similar stuff.

Formal letter confirming place, needed to prove you will be a student come october for purposes of ISIC, Student Bank accts, immigration (if you are an international student) etc.

Check list from Senior Tutor, detailing what forms need sending back, and what are just information

College Handbook, detailing all the rules and regulations for the college

Itineray for Freshers Week, and on the reverse a welcome from the JCR welfare officers

NHS Form GMS1 to register with the University Health Centre

Medical Questionarre

Dietary requirements form.

Next of Kin details form

Room allocation questionarre.

Accomodation booking form for arrival prior to 3rd October

Form asking if you want lunch on 3rd October

Form selling you tickets to JCR Freshers Bop

Form selling you tickets to all JCR events (Golden Ticket)

Occupancy Agreement to sign

Flyer for University Health Center

Coupons for The Times, combined with a notice telling you where the Faculty Handbooks are found online

Slip detailing that the entire pack can be resent in Large Print.

Flyer for the JCR Website

Booklet detailing the IT Service at Durham

Flyer for the Language Center

Freshers Handbook, as published by the JCR

Letter detailing various college information, such as Laundry Facilities, Postal Address, Term Dates, Registration, Car Parking etc.

Memo on College Tutor system

Details about DUO

Info on Personal Development Planning

Flyer for the college library

Letter from the JCR President

Packing advice, i.e. as there is a formal first night, ensure your suit is at the top of your case

Details of student loan for UK students. Explains that loans will be paid around 13th October, so you need enough money to see you through 10days. They also state you don't have to pay your college bill until after your loan has cleared.

Letter detailing tuition fees, etc

Letter detailing a typical student budget, and how to survive financially

Letter/Form from the Director of Sport, asking if you wish to opt out of the sports-card and if you are a "high-performance" sportsman/sportswoman

Flyer advertising the University Rowing team

Notice that freshers can't keep cars in Durham

Letter from Academic Registrar, welcoming you to Durham, and stressing the importance of not dying of Meningitis

Letter from Academic Registrar to show to your doctor, to help you not die of Meningitis

Flyers for various JCR groups. They sent me details on the String orchestra (I play a brass instrument) Womens Rugby (Oops) and the Christian Union (I am not christian). Their targeted marketing campaign appears to be spot on!

Finally there's a set of instructions relating to the special traffic arrangements for the Bailey, over the weekend of the 2nd & 3rd October.

Whats even better, is this is only the first pack of bumph. I know from experience this is only the start...
well thats gunna take sum reading!

So ur not allowed to keep a car? is that a town policy? not that i can drive but i wanted to learn whilst up there? what about future years?

Whats a golden ticket? is it useful? cost?

And meningitus...ive had the men C jab in year 11, do i need it again? i hope not, its my biggest phobia and i practically always faint! Actually an injection meant i died once, only 4 a few seconds admittedly, but i dont know if it triggered the fear. It was my first MMR jab, but because of my reaction I was told i couldnt have the important booster which means im not actually vaccinated!

Partly a council policy, partly a Uni policy. Basically there is nowhere to park in Durham City as it is all residents only. That means you would have to leave the car in a Uni carpark and they don't want all their carparks filled. If you are living out, then you can get a permit from the Council, and the University asks you to register the car with them as well. They both stipulate the same conditions, the university just echoes what the council lays down.

Specific to Trevs JCR! Probably not, and £65

You don't have to do anything. What the university is worried about, is that students are susceptible to Meningitis C. What the uni wants is that if you were to die of it, then they could just point at all the letters and say you ignored their advice. Its a liability and damage limitation excercise, as opposed to any real desire to see you all innoculated. Students dying makes very bad press.

Hmm, Trevs has obviously got its act together better than Hild Bede. Still waiting for my info-pack of joy.
Reply 126

OMIGOD yes i may be slow but i just realised that Durham knows whether or not they'll be seeing me in October! Do you think it's worth getting a head start on everyone else and ringing them tomorrow to beg?

wouldn't bother if i were you...there was a whole lot on the ucas website saying they wouldn't be revealing acceptance/refusals on there until thursday for 'confidentialy reason and so i doubt that the colleges or departments will be willing to spill the beans- they are probably still tryig to decide who they are gonna take out of the 'near misses'

I think she means more "the mobile telephone number" of an admissions clerk ? Or, for other Universities which may be a bit "posher", the number of the country club where daddy plays golf with the chief admissions officer.
