It does say something for the University though. According to his homepage he is a graduate of St Chads, and read a MA here as well.

I can think of at least 7 Durham graduates off the top of my head who have loved the Uni so much they have stayed around in non-academic capacities. Most of the rest I can think of work for the IT Service, but DSU's receptionist is a Durham Graduate, and you get alumni dotted around various service departments such as Treasurers Dept, and Development and Alumni Office.

wouldn't you expect them in the alumni office?

Not particularly!

As far as I can tell the DAO is responsible for squeezing as much cash from alumni as is humanly possible. They also run a website for alumni with forums, and galleries of photos etc.
While it makes sense to employ an enthusiastic graduate to head the department, the actual fundraising is done by students themselves, you will see adverts for "Telephone Fundraiser" all over the place. He probably just shuffles large amounts of bureaucracy around.

i hope my degree gets me more than "receptionist"! Its costing enough....i worked it out today....ive got £790 to live on all year, having spent all my savings on holiday!
Well what about the problems with the student loan? Does anyone know if its gunna be fixed? I heard a rumour that theyve fixed the problem for at least the people who applied on time? (Apparentely they lost applications in the system and 1st years may not recieve student loan).

I was planning to spend a bit of my saved money in Ibiza, if I dont get my student loan ill have to save all of it and it'll ruin my holiday :frown:

You will recieve a loan, just not necessarily in time for October.

We are all lucky, living in college with food provided. If your loans is delayed then college will have to be flexible over collecting payment for your rent & food.

Where people may have a problem, is if they are in private rented accomodation, and the landlord figures he will just evict them and find some non-student tenants. In those sorts of situations, the universities are going to have to bail people out.

depends on how rich you are (well how rich your parents are) as to how much tuition you pay, but the max is £1150pa. You have to pay all the accomodation costs though, but you can get a loan (75% you can have whatever your circumstances, and 25% you can apply to have on top of that if you need it, again based on family income)

You can also get and overdraft, and like me, a job!

No. Our tution fees are capped at £1150 per year, rising £25 per year.

We then apply to our Local Education Authority, and if our parents earn below a certain threshold our fees are reduced accordingly.

The difference between our fees, and the cost of the course is met by HEFCE block teaching grants.

This is all changing for people applying in the academic year 2005/2006 following the Higher Education Act recieving Royal Assent. Upfront fees will be abolished, but fees will be charged of up to £3,000 per year, to be payed after graduation. In theory it will introduce a market for Higher Education in the UK, but most unis have pledged to charge the maximum already. In order to be permitted to charge higher fees, the universities must demonstrate they are "widening access" to the Access Regulator, which has been created by the act. There were also changes to the Visitor system, which deals with student appeals and complaints. That is being replaced by a Student Ombudsman. There may have been other things bundled in the Act aswell.
Hmmm.. so in short, you pay off your loan by yourselves? Or do your parents pay that for you?

Loans and from 2006, fees are paid through the tax system. From each pay-packet a certain percentage goes towards repaying them

In the UK it always makes financial sense to take the full loan, as the interest payable is less than what can be earnt by investing it.

my parents gave me the money in advance and the idea is i don't get a loan. lots of people hav to pay them off themselves though. my parents never had the chance of a good education (both left school at 16 with no qualifications) and so want me to have every oppotunity

Depends how generous your parents are, but you don't have to start paying it back till you are earning £15000pa and even then you can take ages paying it back, it think the interest is only 3.1%, although it was 1.3% until fairly recently.
