Diplomats watch

    • Thread Starter

I am trying to find out stuff about diplomats, and I was wondering if anyone could help me by telling me: how to become one, what the job entails, job prospects and salaries. Thanks

I'd suggest having a browse through FCO Careers.

    Or http://www.civilservice.gov.uk/careers/index.asp

It's very competitive - Think the Fast Stream (5% success rate) but harder (there's an extra round beyond the assessment centre.)

Much easier, if more time-consuming to go into the home civil service, work your way up to junior management and transfer sideways into the Foreign Office or do a secondment.

I went into the civil service as a junior admin officer, applied for and got onto the Fast Stream through the in-service process (no psychometric tests or any of the early stages) and am in the process of lining up a European secondment.

To boost your chances, get as many "life" experiences as possible. Travel, work and volunteer and above all, get a language or two behind you.

    All the best
