Any tips for getting a first year internship?

As there are far fewer opportunities in first year than second, I was wondering if anyone had any advice so I can spend my summer being productive! I'm interested in HR, PR, recruitment, marketing etc.

Apply to smaller companies and e-mail them directly rather than waiting for specific internship vacancies to go up, many are willing to take on someone for a few weeks. Alternatively, look at internship vacancies for smaller companies and apply to them - they tend to be more flexible with age in comparison to the bigger schemes (e.g. Unilever for marketing) which specifically target 2nd years.

Firstly can I congratulate you on planning to do something proactive with your summer. I'd definitely recommend checking out the many internship sites that there are as they may well list summer placements. Otherwise I would make a list of companies that you would like to work for and if you are prepared to work for free, a good number of them will be interested. As Roflcakes1 said smaller companies will be easier to make contact with, and will likely be more eager for the help. I would recommend using LinkedIn to find the name and/or email address of the marketing director/manager or HR director/manager and connecting with them, and sending them an email directly asking if they are interested. I'm from a marketing background in small businesses and we always took on summer interns as well students for their placements years.
