Google it, download it from the page, and use it a bit like MSN with the adding and whatever. You can buy skype phones, not essential though. It should make itself clear.

Missed the what is it bit, sorry. Wake up, brain. Basically you use it to call people for free on your computer (or skype phone) over the internet. You can use it to instant message too if you want. It is free and therefore good.

    Hey,

Google "Skype" and then go to their homepage.

Download and install it. Then, open it up and set up your account as it will tell you, then search for friends, and chat or speak to them.

To talk, all you need is a microphone. If you have a laptop 5 years or younger, then it will have a microphone in it - even if you cant see it.

    Hope that helps.

No, you have to pay to call landlines although it may work out cheaper than a landline phone if you're calling a national or international number.

Skype are one of the few VoIP providers who don't peer freely with other VoIP carriers.

My business line is with www.sipgate.co.uk who use the SIP protocol the same as any other VoIP system. Landline/mobile/international calls are a fraction of what it costs from a BT line or mobile, and calls to any VoIP network except Skype are free.
