Best post-war Chancellor

Thought this would be a good discussion base. Think Hammond is doing fairly good for now but its very early days to give a running commentary (pun intended) on his chancellorship. Osborne before him a mixed bag powered solely on rhetoric.

IMO the best Chancellor since 1945 has been Stafford Cripps then Ken Clarke in the 90s but Gordon Brown (apart from the gold shambles) also deserves a mention...

It has to be either Stafford Cripps or Rab Butler

Clarke and Brown oversaw the pornographic 93-03 period so deserve a lot of credit albeit Brown got worse as he went along (surplus to deficit, eventual recession).

Absolutely agree. Clarke got unemployment down to under 2 million by 1997 whilst interest rates and inflation both lowered to much better levels than previously. He paved the way for Brown to get rid of the deficit so between 1998-01, the latter was operating on a budget surplus which has only happened in several years over the past 60. Too much spending yes, but definitely maintained low inflation + interes rates although neither Labour or the Tories regulated the banks properly enough. Brown also sold gold at crazy low prices and still continued the deregulation further that had been proposed by Major's government..

Darling was a good Chancellor. He handled the recession brilliantly. If you don't believe me watch this:

Brilliant documentary. Thanks.

I don't judge Darling in a negative nor positive manner due to circumstance mainly.

Loved Mandleson's quote at the end.. 'Cameronism is the conservative rememberance that the duty of a Tory is to be elected'.
