The Student Room Group

Merton

I have met the offer to do Maths & Stats in Merton. As I am an overseas student, I was interviewed in my region and so I have never been to Oxford. And I ve got loads of questions about it.

1. I have recieved the pack containing the terms & regulations booklet, an application form of medical service, and a letter concerning the fees. Has anyone recieved this?

2. The pack, however, does not contain anything about pre-reading materials and accommodation. Is it all about the fresher's pack or will more come?

3. Merton just said I had fulfilled the grades in the offer by email and, written confirmation and update in UCAS would follow. But the latter hasnt come yet. is it that they won't send any written confirmation and update the status in UCAS until they have got the GCE grades of the remaining applicants?
Congratulations, that's superb. Do you have any particular questions as regards to your Merton offer that you've met, etc.?

For #3, I think it's possible that you'll get sent all this stuff the same time as everyone else; shortly after August 19th (results day!)

I got sent a reading list in June, despite having a conditional offer. I don't think you should worry about it too much. They might only be sending the reading lists out after they know who's coming so, again, after August 19th.

4. "There is no charge for the first 1000 units of electricity consumed each term." Is there an individual electric heater or is the room centrally heated? How is the electricity consumed by the heater metered? Is it easy to consume over 1000 units of electricity in a term?

5. What is an academic gown like? Does anyone has a photo of 'subfusc' clothing? Are there any special requirements on suit?

6. I am an overseas student. Can I stay at the college accomodation during long vacations? If so, how much does it cost?
Rooms in Merton are not centrally heated. They have individual electric heaters. If you do go over your allocation it won't be by much. 1st years (and others who don't get 1sts/distinctions in prelims/mods) wear commoner's gowns which can be bought in Oxford (don't worry about academic dress until you come up). Congratulations on your place at Merton - I'm sure you'll enjoy it (especially if you can cope with the oppresive atmosphere)

Not unless you have your TV, hi-fi and fan on 24/7 it isn't.

The standard stuff - black gown, mortarboard (square shaped hat, which you don't wear, just hold), black bow tie (/ribbon for girls), on top of a suit. You rarely need to be dressed like that though.

Yeah if you're a student it'll probably be the same price over the vacations. Though over the summer it could be cheaper to move into private accommodation - starting at £60/week or so.

Here's a picture of the gowns for whoever's interested.

Just to correct Jools the Bow-tie has to be white
Oops, yeh.

P.S. On your way to matriculation you can easily make triple figures from snap-happy American and Japanese tourists...
