They kill cells with a specific foreign antigen usually of a pathogen. This includes host cells that have been infected and then display viral antigens on their cell surface for example. They often use perforins to form pores in the membrane of these cells, and will secrete proteases into the pores, which will enter the infected cell and cause apoptosis (programmed cell death).
