Which geog BA courses will allow me to do both phys and human geography, and have flexibility with the options I pick? I'm looking at Durham, Sheffield, and Bristol atm. Thanks.

From what I do know, at Durham the 1st year course is identical for both BA and BSc students and in the first year an equal amount of physical and human is studied. It is then the next year where you start to specialise, but as I understand it you can still study physical stuff aswell. Also it is apparently not too difficult to change between the courses because obviously if the course is the same in the first year and you decide you hate human, to switch to the BSc would not be much inconvenience.

Cool! Which college you applying to? I was going to apply to Van Mildret, but I've got a mate there who says it's not too great, so I think I'll go to Collingwood now!

I'm in two minds between Collingwood and Van Mildert too, what did they say wasn't too great about VM?

They just said it was quite quiet, not very central, and the people there wern't all that friendly. He said he spent most of his time in Collingwood, and the atmosphere was much better there.

Ahh right, thanx for that, i'll bear it in mind!
Hello geography friends! Aahhh Durham and VM/Collingwood is the first choice uni for four of us geographers - you two (Aimee & Rob), Ellie and me! But it seems we have lost Aimee to Collingwood. Actually, Collingwood was my other preference but i reckon i'll apply to Mildert.

What made you choose V. Mildert?

1. There are lotsa ducks
2. Most ensuite rooms (although i probably wouldn't have one!)
3. No shared rooms
4. All rooms have a network point
5. Some buildings have been refurbished recently
6. I heard it had a good atmosphere (although what you said makes it sound like it doesn't!)
7. Fewer applications that most other colleges

This used to be the case, but is no longer true. There are several identical core modules, but BA students pick their 2(?) options from a human list and BSc students from a physical one. If you search in the right places, you can find the list and exact details of the course. If you ask nicely and I don't fall asleep within the next half hour, I can probably find them for you .

Bristol's course allows you to do much the same as Durham; you do a mix of physical and human in the first year, then decide to specialise in the second. Switching between the BA and BSc is supposed to be quite simple, as long as the class sizes aren't too huge.

Either that or you could do what I'm doing  and do the MSci at Bristol, and choose to stay on an extra year!

Just out of interest, why have you chosen the MSci rather than BSc?

i think pretty much everywhere that offers geography lets you do both in the first year. it is, however, much harder to find somewhere which you can opt out of that and go down one route (ie phy or hum)from the outset (there are plenty, but choice is limited)
