Portsmouth is much, MUCH cheaper than Oxford. I'm paying £650p/m for a lovely one bedroom flat in Southsea, a 20 minute walk from uni, but to rent the same size place in Oxford, you'd be looking at £1000+. It also has the benefit of being near the sea if you like that kind of thing. Certain areas are pretty grim (Fratton), but Southsea is lovely. If you're looking for somewhere with a lot of culture and history, however, Oxford might be the place for you. Also, in Oxford you will likely rely on public transport, due to the distance between places, where as in Portsmouth, everything is pretty much within walking distance.

Any specific questions, let me know. I live in Oxford, but attend Portsmouth Uni.
