They seem very pricey if you ask me. The cost of living in Thailand is barely anything.

Real Gap is quite an ironic name really.

I've never had experience of 'real gap' but I was at one point looking to do a gap year with them too.

I'd say that all these gap 'companies' are expensive, but that's no reason to dismiss them straight away. Obviously, they are making a profit on whatever they are providing. However, you do get the benefit (and security) of someone in that country to go to for help or advise, and they have more structure to them than just drifting around in a country.

I reckon give them a call with a list of questions, they were really friendly when I emailed them. And check out http://www.gapyearreview.co.uk/

hope that helps

lol true say.

I've just finished a gap year and have always been kind of against these companies but I took a trip in China with Intrepid and had a fantastic time. I didn't really feel like I was getting ripped off either.
In Thailand however, the backpacker culture there is so well developed that its not really very hard to get around, and so cheap that i don't really think its worth it. It depends what you want to do. If you want to volunteer or something then you kind of have to go with a company, but I know some cheaper and easier ways to do this. Also, if you want to learn Muay Thai I trained at a fantastic camp that I highly recommend, called True Bee.

PM me if you want any more detailed info.

LOL Definitley is.

All these 'gap experience' groups just plunder money from the inexperienced.

If you're off to Thailand, just book your flights and go. It's simple to get around Thailand.

Ditto. Thailand is one of the easiest places to do independant travel in the world! there is such an ingrained backpacking culture, you'll be gagging for a bit of a challenge! lol

Next time i'm off to 'Nam baby. Thailand was ace, especially some of the far out places. Ton Sai anyone? haha qualiteh!

Vietnam is immense! My fave country from my se asian jaunt! make sure you do Nha Trang and Sa Pa!!

It's amazing how immense and consuming SE Asia really is. Some of the places redefined my perception of serenity.

I'm itching to do China and get the train to Nam. Or vice-versa.

Once you do the whole solo travellers thing, you never really let go of the whole travellers code. It gives me a warm, almost strange longing for the outdoors and complete freedom.

Back to the subject in hand...OP go to thailand, now.

Drunk? You betchya.

Totally... and it gives you that little bit of inner peace to escape to once it's over! And I can tell you, I'm never gonna get annoyed with British roads or obstinant staff ever again!! face...face!!

I was thinking about the same kind of thing, but now I'm thinking about doing it alone.

China - 'Nam - Thailand etc - anyone done it? What do you reckon about a female travelling this alone? Will it be safe?
Reply 14
shell, it's safe! I did a lot of my trip solo too, you're more likely to get ripped off than anything else. Though that's not a reason to let your guard down. As long as you use your common sense and your instincts you'll be fine. Enjoy it, it's a beautiful part of the world!

Though I've heard China is more difficult than se asia cos of the language barrier. Not been myself, so don't quote me on that!!
Steph!

China is significantly more difficult imo. In most places I went the only roman characters I saw were in adverts or signs for international companies. You have to learn things like the chinese character for internet to get about. If you go, go towards the end of your trip so you're more experienced or join a tour group (I went with Intrepid who were amazing). Also, due to some diabolical internal policies in China, much of the country is deprived of women so there tends to be a higher percentage of single men in bars and things. However, after about 6 months travelling all over the place, China is my favourite country, you should definately go. It's incredible.

Yeah, China was my big worry, I'm still debating over it.

Basically I have a chunk of my trip sorted, bog standard route - Fiji - New Zealand - Australia - Malaysia - Borneo - Thailand - Cambodia - Laos - Vietnam... Then I'm not sure whether to start in the US and then do them, then finish in China, or start in South Africa and finish in Vietnam and miss out China, or do South America (although I have been warned off here as a female)... I don't know, I'm a bit confused.

Anyway, back to the original topic... what are other companies like then aside from Real Gap, such as Intrepid?

that sounds amazing!! cambodia laos vietnam is an odd route though. people usually tend to go cambodia-vietnam-laos or laos-vietnam-cambodia. Not sure why, maybe the laos/cambodia border crossing is less established or the roads aren't as good? not saying you shouldn't do it the other way! Do you know when you're going? (rainy season isn't fun!)
Reply 18
Sorry, that's me not thinking about what I'm writing, I'm doing Cambodia-Vietnam -Laos! Not a clue when I'm going yet, when's rainy season?

it was just starting when I left in june and it lasts till about oct/nov I think. Apparently the best time to go is our winter, but I went in spring/summer and it was fine, bit hot and humid but tolerable.
