Apart from my gamer friends from the internet all of my real life friends that I talk to on a regular basis are girls tbh. Never had that much in common with guys my age. We have nothing to talk about most of the time lol. My best male friend is an architect in his late 20s.

I have male friends but not ones that i talk to regularly

I think that's part of the problem, it's like when I am hanging out with a guy we have nothing to talk about and it ends up feeling pointless on both sides.
Ye it's just generic small talk usually.

For me it's also because a lot of the time young guys are always trying to make everything a competition and I find it boring. If I'm actually entering a legit competition it's fine and I enjoy it, but not in day to day life lol. The older I get the less it happens though. And when I talk to actual adults they don't do it and I find it easier. But I've not put too much effort into making friends recently so it could be easier now.

I think when you both have a common interest like an activity you can do together then it's kinda easy to make friends. Like a gym buddy, then it's a bit more natural because you have a task to focus on together instead of just standing there trying to force a conversation lol.

That's probably why most of my friends are gamers. We started off playing games and co operating rather than having proper conversations. It just graduated into actual friendships afterwards.
