    I don't get how they jumped from first step to the second one. I understand what they did in the last 3 steps, but I don't understand why they did that. The closest I got to the answer was 14.

    The brackets are being divided by 2, but then in your next line it disappeared (you forgot to mulitply LHS by 2 since you multiplied 2 on the RHS). Also what the user above clarified.
